This can only be done for the merger tree files, and as such this can only be done, for example, for the mt_gal_id array in galids_*.hdf5.

Things to do to make this work

Implement two length scales: one for merger tree galaxies, one for other galaxies.
Implement a new galaxy definition that includes this alternate length scale.
Make sure that everytime I'm identifying a particle is in the main galaxy, I'm doing so using mt_gal_id.
