few (very few) benefits:

all the typing_extensions modules scribly uses are now in stdlib https://docs.python.org/3/whatsnew/3.8.html#typing
i guess i could use the walrus thing in some places

setting as blocked since python3.8 is keg-only on brew. not sure what that means but it means it's annoying to set up for now. will switch to 3.8 once ready to go on brew
