zhmcclient 1.17.0 has been released with its new simplified approach that was added by multiple PRs (see issue https://github.com/zhmcclient/python-zhmcclient/issues/1485 for details).
So the approach has been sufficiently validated and this item is to implement the remaining steps for the same approach in this repo:
The zhmc exporter project has a single PR https://github.com/zhmcclient/zhmc-prometheus-exporter/pull/632 with the changes needed (for projects that have dropped Python<3.8, migrated to pyproject.toml, and migrated to towncrier).
