traffic signs + others #44

Hello,

Any problem with existing icons ?

No, they are great!

Have a suggestion for new icons ?

Yes, here they are:

Icons related to tourism:
-------------------------

1) fortress (not necessarily the same as a castle: castle is medieval,
fortress is more recent...)
2) palace (again, not the same as a castle: not fortified...)

Icons showing traffic signs:
----------------------------

e.g stop sign, major road, directions, speed limits, etc.

Culture:
--------

Library

That's all, I can think of now. (I wonder wether there will be any one of
those you have not heard already, but anyway...)

best regards

Hello József !

Nice suggestions you have.
I accepted fortress and palace. Maybe Matthias will help on these ones because
he is
the tourism expert :)

Traffic signs : stop sign, direction, speed limit are OK but I don't know how
to do
with speed limits. Each country has it's own limits : 10, 20, 30, 40, 50,
Miles/h or
Km/h. Do I need to create a sign for speed from 10 to 150 ? = 15 signs ? what
is your
opinion ?

Major road is already done :

Library is already done (but not perfect I assume) :

Nico

Nico is right, yes, I'm on this... I have these that are not published in this
project, yet.

- City Wall
- Chapel
- Castle Ruin
- Historical Building
- Monastery
- Tower

I'm going to re-design Castle and Castle Ruin and at the same time I will make
the
new Fortress and Palace icons. They are all different but very, very hard to
make
obvious what the signify on 20x20 pixels... I'm thinking the Fortress will look
something like the Castle does today and I will do a Castle one with towers
instead.
Palace I have no clue right now...

Hi Nico, and all!

Concerning speed limits, I thought that there could be just one version showing
"xy"
instead of 10, 20, etc. After all, when the user deploys the icon, they can
specify
the actual value. I admit that it is not a perfect solution, but it prevents the
"speed limit icon bloat".

A possible variation is to have two versions, one showing "mph" the other
showing
"kmh", so that users can indicate the how the numbers should be interpreted,
though I
think this is not essential, as it should be anyway obvious from the location
and can
also be specified by the text...

With "main road" I actually meant priority road (as defined here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vienna_Convention_on_Road_Signs_and_Signals).

Yes, in the meantime I realized that you already have a library sign: I did not
find
it first because I was looking for it under culture, not under education. I
agree
that may be it's not perfect, but I do not have any better idea how to depict
it:
it's not easy.

Anyway, thanks for accepting the ideas and also for the work you are doing!

József

Suggestions for new icons:

 - Castle
A castle is a defensive structure seen as one of the main symbols of the Middle
Ages.

 - Palace
A palace is a grand residence, especially a royal residence or the home of a
head of
state or some other high-ranking dignitary, such as a bishop or archbishop.

 - Fortification (Fortress, Fort)
Fortifications are military constructions and buildings designed for defense in
warfare and military bases.

What do you think?

Hi,

Great work! I think they are all fine!

I see you finally went for the explicit speed limit values. This gives the
possibility for others to contribute if they miss an actual value... ;-))

I noticed that you added an icon for canoeing recently (8 August, canoe.png). In
fact, it looks like kayaking. I suggest simply renaming it to kayak.png. I can
volunteer to create an icon for canoeing later, if you do not insist on a very
hard
deadline...

Hello József

Thanks for the advice :)
For now, I duplicated canoe to create kayak, so that people using canoe still
see
something, until we create a different one.
