The application allows more than 2 group tags which I don't think should be valid.

Suppose you have a friend from both CS2103T and CS2101 groups, then this person is in both groups. Therefore, a person can be in multiple groups, and we must keep into account for that case, as it is quite common in real life.

In the case of accepting many parameters, this is clearly stated in our UG, that if you specify a parameter more than the specified requirements, only the last occurrences of the parameters are taken. In this case, since you have specified more than 2 group tags (g/), the app will take your last two group tags, cs2101 and cs2103t. Therefore, this is an intended feature.
