When a page points to an URL or to another page, then there's no UI for administering it with page revisions. Hence the if the linked URL is rewritten, or another page is selected the revision will not contain it.
I propose to handle these type of pages as empty Portlet type page in staging with a pop up appearing when user navigates to the page, which asks the user what to do, navigate to the linked page or stay on the virtual page and do administration. This behavior should be introduced only in staging environment.
Further more we could show the linked URL or portal page in an embedded iframe.
