Let's move ahead with making per-test state unique, and easily found.

I would like to configure the repo to make merges not work until CI passes. Notably, this pr breaks CI, neither of us noticed, and now broken CI has been merged into dev.

My CI fix made it in before the merge. It seems it was an insufficient fix, though, as tests that pass locally failed on the runner.
