Individual commit messages explain each one. Nothing deep here, but several handy improvements. And one mathematical correction to a comment.

Thanks, sorry I haven't reviewed this. I'm doing a large refactoring and improvement of the APIs and implementations of a lot of this stuff. Some of the effects of this PR may emerge out of those refactorings.
