Enough people want this that I think its worth looking into? Is this hard or easy to implement?

Hard for us right now. I'm also not at all sold on it being a good idea.

hey @arfon, I followed the discussion you already had about this and how it actually can create a hostile community. totally fair. what about a solution in the middle, we have tiers that may match our badges or something

some clever title

user name, user name, user name, user name,

some clever title for users with a bit smaller number of transcriptions

user name, user name, user name,

etc

And we have just 3 or so elite tiers where we highlight our really dedicated users? No ordering within the tiers, so their isn't that same one-to-one competition? Still dangerous?

I was thinking the same as AH. Or, even safer, perhaps, just create public listings of who has achieved certain badges. That's already established, but only personal right now. Make it lightly competitive by putting it on the front, while still not making it a head-to-head thing.

I think lightly competitive is okay. For CalBug we were thinking this might be shorter-term taxon-based projects akin to the being ship captain for Old Weather.
