Logged in state does not persist when going from planktonportal.org to talk.planktonportal.org #95

52 referenced many problems with logged in state in Safari. Most are solved. The only remaining one, which I notice with both the latest Safari in Chrome on OS X

  1. sign out https://talk.planktonportal.org
  2. sign out https://www.planktonportal.org
  3. sign in https://www.planktonportal.org
  4. go to https://www.planktonportal.org/#/classify
  5. classify stuff and click FINISHED
  6. Click DISCUSS

Result: the talk page opens but I am not logged in.

If I log in Talk manually before step 6, everything is fine. Once I log in once, I stay logged in in Talk.

So overall, it is very minor issue. I thought I would mention it for completeness.

@parrish Not sure if a similar or a different problem but user AvastMH has just reported:

I am transferring here (PP) whilst logged into PenguinW, but when I arrive at PP I'm logged out and I get a brief 'we're out of images' message. :( I signed in and the message vanished as I did that.

I hope this is helpful, though it seems to mean that a 'fix' has not fixed the problem :(

I'm working on Windows and Firefox, though I suspect the problem is nothing to do with my program & browser.

Here is the discussion: https://talk.planktonportal.org/#/boards/BPK0000002/discussions/DPK0000ej9?page=3&comment_id=57cf540209a94f3f080003a2

Shall I create a new issue or? Thanks

@parrish @jiho

This problem is really alarming for me. We know about more volunteers visiting Plankton Portal from Penguin Watch via a link in a discussion on the PenguinW Talk who also got the "Out of Data" message. They left the project immediately because they thought the project is finished.

I am afraid it is a much more common problem than it may seem to be. There has been a very low activity on the project for quite a long time. We tried to advertise the project on PW where the last data was completed recently and volunteers there are waiting for a new data set. Sadly, it had no effect on Plankton Portal activity. Just guessing why...

What about turning off the "Out of data message" somehow? (So it didn't pop up to anyone)

It is impossible those volunteers were out of images as they haven't participated in the project yet. We're on 24 % by the statistics. I'd like to help the project but feeling so powerless...

I'm not sure why it would be showing out of data messages (I'll take a look at that).

As far as the login issue, the older sites no longer have single-sign-on. You have to log into each site separately.

www.planktonportal.org and talk.planktonportal.org share a session, so signing into one, signs into the other. I can't reproduce any issue with login there.

@parrish I've looked into before and found it difficult to pinpoint: https://github.com/zooniverse/planktonportal/issues/31#issuecomment-176242516

User suzeroo is having troubles to get any picture to classify when signed in:

suzeroo: (23 days ago) I've had a good long run of classifying, now getting the out of data messages again. I've tried using firefox instead of chrome, and have cleared the cache. Refreshing the screen doesn't help of course, because the out of data message must be answered before I can do anything else.

I click OK on both out of data messages, and there is a blank screen. I then sign out, and an image comes up to classify. I can then sign in, classify that image and go on to the next one. If I go to Talk, then back to classify, I get out of data messages. I've tried signing out, leaving the website, coming back, signing in.. I get out of data messages.

I'm not having any trouble at all on Penguin Watch, or other projects (I've tried 2-3).

I asked her to try switching the data sets to make sure she hasn't run out of data for sure. Her reply:

I tried, no luck. If I enter PP on a signed out basis, select Med or Cal, then sign in, I get out of data messages. If I classify first, then sign in before clicking on "next" or "discuss", I get out of data messages. I can't do anything at all until I click OK on both messages, then I can get into Talk. But I can't classify. That happens for both Med and Cal.

Can anyone help? She's unable to classify for 23 days already. She was one of the most active volunteers. We really need her.

@eatyourgreens tried to run the classification on PP about two weeks ago, here is what he got:

when I go to planktonportal.org I get a popup saying We're Out Of Data and the classify page is empty. I've never classified there so I can't have seen all the subjects.

Turns out I wasn't signed in. If I sign in, I can load subjects for California and Mediterranean.

I have no troubles getting images to classify except when the memory of my computer is busy (loading a page with lots of pictures in another browser tab etc.), then I also experience the Out of data pop-up.
