Agreed, it is lacking in documentation. Adding the stylesheets is the bulk of the work required. All of the menu nesting is handled by defining ActiceAdmin resources with a belongs_to relation, which is provided by ActiveAdmin. The only difference is in how the menus are rendered.
I also think providing an image of before and after would be helpful.
