More openable panels for replaceable components that enable functions #268

Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe. Expansion of an existing feature. In a word or two, more "add-ons".

Describe the solution you'd like I would like more of this and implemented in a specific way. There are several panels and fixtures both interior and exterior to the ships and the station modules that could become something that opens and has missing components inside that can be added or replaced if broken or damaged. Further, these components can't just be something that is added to the ship or station just for adding it but to actually enable or improve functionality in the station or ship.

For example, the Air Purification system works as long as there is oxygen and improves with an air filter. This could be something that is extended as in by opening a panel either outside the station/ship or inside and inserting a hose that might be missing or needs replacing could enable air flow completely. That is, the cabin cannot pressurize until a hose or air duct is added at this point. There's a few air ducts in the ceiling of the Haven, take a small section out of one of the ducts and require it to be in place to have air pressurization.

Another component could be added for the Air Generator - perhaps not a hose but cluster of colored wires that have 2 or 3 connectors on them. Once plugged in the Air Generator works or works better. These are just examples, not specifics, although a wire cluster and hoses are fairly cool - up to you how they get integrated. There are many other components that could be thought of.

Enabling or improving functionality with new creatively-thought-of components is the purpose of this feature request.

Other examples: Heating systems, cooling systems (in the PSM), air quality could be enhanced with more components, various fluid systems: Oil, Hydraulics, Water Purification, Fluid Recycling, and Fire Suppression are a few suggestions. I don't want the game to become a giant fix-it game but I would like more than there is now. You don't have to add fluid spewing everywhere in-game just a panel that displays status. Even existing display panels could become multi-function displays for a few of these systems.

Add a vial that carries 10oz of viscalgemite (or ethylene glycol) for refueling hydraulic systems for door operation, grappler, and elevators. Add a very small deflector assembly on the bow of all ships that until fitted with the necessary component warping always results in traveling through debris. Actual existing debris fields should override the deflector assembly.

These new components would be crafted from already existing refined and/or raw materials / ingredients (except the viscalgemite :-) ).

Describe alternatives you've considered This is an expansion of the existing feature of collecting and crafting items to extend the capability/health of station modules and ships for improving Quality of Life. I believe this is a core feature and would like to see it expanded.

It's evident by the Status Display panels that ZG was considering / planning to add heat processing in the game but didn't pursue it. The fixture operation for the Singularity cell detonator is very cool. There are other fixtures and panels on the bulkheads that could easily become operable / manipulatable for inserting a component or two.

Additional context There is a panel to the right of the undocking latch in the Steropes that could become such an openable panel with a swing open door (swinging up to the ceiling). There are several panels in the Fabricator and the Haven that could become openable. There is a lot of opportunity in the upstairs control console room / area of the CBM. Some of the exterior plating on any module could become an openable panel with a small blinking light or colored light sequence near it and/or inside the opened panel. The opening of these panels would not need to be as complicated as the Docking panels that currently appear on the exterior of every module.

Here is a visual of the ductwork that could be modfiied: ductwork_2 might work better since it is a smaller section and has model edges that might be easier to extract the part and not have to "chop" a larger part as in the ductwork_1 img. ductwork_1 ductwork_2

It used to be like that before, this is not something new at all.

About making the pipes work, it is already in another idea, to improve the damage system, making a rework of the current 2D damage spots we have today and make it so it has actual animations on pipes having wholes on them, etc.

Causing fire damage or air leakage, and those new pipes will have Color code and Text saying what their purpose is instead of just being this metallic jungle that is today.

About requiring the pipes to be fabricated that is a good idea, but need to be more refined, so it can join the damage overall.

👍

As you know, the grate already opens (separate issue submission), but the two panels to the right of the grate would be another great pair of compartments to store something behind them (they even have handles!). 😄 This is in the SPM.
