This solves #57.

BTW do we really want to have three individual commits for a release? Alternatively, we could simply do one commit, e.g. "Release version 3.4.0" containing all file changes.

@dstillman Any comments on this PR? It worked for me fine with Cygwin and I would like to create now v3.3.1 after we have the other item types and the syntax checker.

Having one commit instead of three seems fine.
