CSL variables scale and dimensions #7

Closed rmzelle closed 7 years ago

rmzelle commented 13 years ago

There is a CSL ticket to add two variables, scale and dimensions. If added, "Scale"/scale can be mapped to scale (for map). "Artwork Size"/artworkSize (currently mapped to genre, present for artwork) and "Running Time"/runningTime (currently unmapped, present for audioRecording, film, podcast, radioBroadcast and videoRecording) could be mapped to dimensions.

Yes - having running time mapped is highly desirable (e.g. for AAA) and dimension makes sense to me. Only question is if it would be possible/a good idea to just add dimension and map scale to dimension, too.

rmzelle commented 13 years ago

For maps, could there be cases where you would want to cite both the maps physical dimensions as well as the scale? (so you would need both variables)

adam3smith commented 13 years ago

I don't think so. This has every imaginable map citation, for example, no mention of their physical dimension ever http://library.owu.edu/citing222.htm#MapinBook same here http://library.mcmaster.ca/maps/mapcite.htm I really don't think maps need a physical dimension field.

rmzelle commented 13 years ago

Then a single variable would be fine, although I don't really consider "scale" to be a type of dimension.

bdarcus commented 12 years ago

Yeah, scale is a ratio.

rmzelle commented 12 years ago

It's a relative dimension. :)

rmzelle commented 12 years ago

Anyway, I don't have a strong opinion here. I would like to limit the amount of variables in CSL, so my vote would be to reuse "dimensions" for storing map scales, but I can be easily convinced of the need for a dedicated "scale" variable.

rmzelle commented 12 years ago

Do we need terms for both "scale" and "dimensions"? I mostly wondering if we would actually benefit from a localized "dimensions" term, especially if we map rather distinct properties like artworkSize and runningTime to the same "dimensions" variable.

rmzelle commented 7 years ago

@adam3smith, assuming http://aurimasv.github.io/z2csl/typeMap.xml is accurate, everything in the top issue post seems to have made it into Zotero already, so I think this issue can be closed. Agreed?

("scale" and "dimensions" variables, and a "scale" term, were added to CSL 1.0.1: http://docs.citationstyles.org/en/1.0.1/release-notes.html)

rmzelle commented 7 years ago

(confirmed that "scale" and "dimensions" work as CSL variables, and "scale" works as a CSL term, in Zotero 4.0.29.16, so closing this)
