Google Docs named range copying doesn't work (most of the time, sometimes it does, like in my initial testing), which means that you cannot currently copy cites even within the document. There's been an open issue for this bug/feature for 3 years on google docs trackers, and is blocked by some other private issue. Expecting a fix from google is unlikely.
However, the clipboard data when copying text within google docs includes named range info, so we could (and should) implement range copying ourselves. This will also allow copying citations between docs.
