This is probably very risky feature for abuse/malware but I list it here to keep the possible discussion in one place.

To support old email software an SMTP proxy/smarthost would deliver the e-mail to the real email provider. Also, offer IMAP service without encryption, transparently communicating with encryption on to the upstream email server.

Somewhat fantasy feature but since e-mail has stayed pretty much as-is, this is just transport level change.

imapproxy / dovecot might be the way to go here for email fetching. smarthost style SMTP to the other direction.
