Polish Styling #5

Once we get all the content in place and the admin functionality working properly I want to spend a few days on subtle styling and animation that will make the site feel more sophisticated.

I want to use parallax scrolling so it feels more like this site when you're scrolling: http://www.flklrsurf.com/

And hopefully we get some killer photos to break up the content sections like this site does.

There's a cool css library called animate.css that will add some nice fade in effects to the text to give the site some life. We'll keep it subtle and classy, but I think it will give the site a little more life.

Yeah, well that site is pretty hot.

I’ve got Todd and Jeff Hopkins on board with doing a photoshoot, so I’m hopeful that I can get it all orchestrated soon.

Just for the record, I’m really enjoying working on this together. I’ve already learned a ton from working with you and this site is going to be so much better than it would have been. So thanks for jumping in on this project!

I'm having a great time too. It's been a while since I've gotten to build a site from scratch like this. Glad you're learning!

I did some research into parallax scrolling tonight. I found a cool JS library called skroller.js that does some sweet stuff. I'm going to follow this tutorial and get a simple version implemented: http://ihatetomatoes.net/simple-parallax-scrolling-tutorial/

And if we have time, I want to work on more advanced effects.

I'll start digging in tomorrow.

For some reason, I'm unable to pull your parallax-take2 branch. So I started working with the parallax tutorial in the dev branch, and so far, so good.

Also, I emailed you the pictures from Thursday night. Take a look and see what you think.

Sweet. I had been running into trouble with it so I started the new branch. But I didn't get very far so we might be able to just use what you've done.

I looked at the pictures this morning and there's some good stuff in there. Another week or so and we'll be close to launching!

You might want to start looking into who has control of the domain currently so we can point it to the new site. That info is hard to track down in my experience.

I tried out an idea for the map. Let me know what you think. I'm not 100% happy with it as is, but I kind of like the general idea of framing the map like that.

zpfled commented 10 years ago

So, I feel like we're into your realm of expertise, here. Mainly design and styling left to do. I imagine you have some good ideas of what you'd like the site to look like...at least, I hope so, because I don't have many!

davecrow commented 10 years ago

I'm not crazy about the frame on the map. I don't feel like it really adds anything over simply having the map on the page. And as the saying goes...a design isn't finished when there's nothing left to add, but when there's nothing left to take away.

I'm hoping to be able to knock out the front-end styling this week. But Megan is also starting her job this week, so my evenings will probably be shorter. I'm going to get the remaining tasks outlined tonight. I'll identify problems I see, but I may not have solutions yet. So if you want to take a crack at them, go for it and I'll provide feedback.
