Quantify if the rapid change of neural dynamics around merge is elastic or more binary-like....
Maybe consider using different number of factor to fit the data around that time points
In other words, evaluate the binary-ness of the temporal progression during merging events rather than simply comparing before vs. after. If abrupt change is constrained by the factor analysis model used, maybe vary the number of factors to see the more subtle changes.
