ad hoc vs. infrastructure #11

Open GoogleCodeExporter opened 9 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
What steps will reproduce the problem?
1.
2.
3.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?

Please provide any additional information below.

can someone make this a regular access point, instead of ad hoc, the
difference is in the packet of data that carries the ssid, on an access
point it only sends the ssid, on a device it sends the ssid and the device
info, so this should be easy to do

Yea, i verify that the link above for 2.0.5 pre2 sets it up as a infrastructure
instead of ad-hoc on a nexus one with out the updated kernel.

Infrastructure-mode is only supported for devices with a broadcom
bcm4325-chipset (NexusOne, HTC Evo 4G, HTC Desire, HTC Incredible, ...).

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
Samsung Moment has a bcm4325 chipset and it doesn't work on it. Perhaps someone
could share the driver firmware the Nexus One uses for testing purposes? How
about a precompiled driver from a phone with the same architecture as the
Moment?

Original comment by forcys...@gmail.com on 24 Jun 2010 at 10:54

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
Wait, all those phones have bcm4329. Of course it won't work. Any idea on how
to enable AP mode on the firmware, or create the firmware for that matter?
There are no phones with bcm4325 with an AP enabled firmware.

Original comment by forcys...@gmail.com on 24 Jun 2010 at 11:41

Sorry, mistyped ... infrastructure-mode works only on bcm4329-chipsets at the
moment.

Any idea as to why or how to enable it in the fimware? I tried looking into b43
and fwcutter but couldn't understand much. I don't think there's even a
relation to these newer chipsets.

I just got my evo to tether to my roku (AP mode!) Using the above tether

Can confirm that this new download does NOT put the Desire into Infrastructure mode. It remains in adhoc. Using stock Eclair and app is also loading the Evo WiFi module to function as required.

@david.white666: CONFIG_BCM4329_SOFTAP is not enabled in your kernel - that's
the reason.

Original comment by harald....@gmail.com on 1 Jul 2010 at 10:48

@harald.mue: Do you have any list or info on which kernels for the Desire would
this work as infrastructure mode?

Original comment by bbol...@gmail.com on 1 Jul 2010 at 12:36

Or even better, develop a simple update.zip that could be applied in recovery!

Original comment by david.wh...@gmail.com on 1 Jul 2010 at 1:52

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
@bbolgar: No. I think nobody has tried this so far.
@david.white666: No. I don't have a desire - so I would not be able to test
such an update.zip. Anyway ... If there is a rom-cook (who know how to build a
custom kernel) - contact me. I'm willing to help.

Is Infrastructure any more "secure" than the "wpa_supplicant" mode?

When I connect to it in windows it says its less secure, but I thought wpa WAS
secure. Confused. Thanks!

Ugh, I would love to get it working on the moto droid, so I could connect my
Old DS to it and trade some pokemon. So, after going through this page, it
seems that the problem is the drivers on the droid? So much of this stuff goes
right over my head, I wish I could help out.

What about the Droid X and all of the other Verizon phones that are now coming
out with the 3G Mobile Hotspot built into them. If they can do infrastructure
mode (which they can), then it seems it would be possible to get it working for
all Verizon customers, possibly in one shot.

Broadcom bcm4329-chipset built-in!

Original comment by harald....@gmail.com on 30 Jul 2010 at 9:12

Thanks for the clarification. Though it should be possible to support
infrastructure mode on the droid x eventually right? It has "3g mobile
hotspot" built in, and that runs as infrastructure, so the
chipset can definitely handle it.

So are we just giving up on getting AP mode on the HTC devices that DONT have

chipset, which I have seen running in AP mode on a MiniPCI card I have.

Could the developers please update the status/priority of this issue? obviously
this is a problem most of your users would like a solution to. But yet you
still have this set to low priority? we had a few people post possible
solutions but I've seen no convorsation back and forth trying to get to a
solution. I'm not a developer (although I wish I was) But I'm sure that
somthing like this would be a bit higher of a priority than you have it now.

so, this issue gets enough attention for somthing else to get merged in? but
not enough for someone to actually work on this? this is an important thing to
a lot of users.

Original comment by david28...@gmail.com on 9 Sep 2010 at 12:59

Luckily the developer decides those things. He has decided this:

Type-Enhancement
Priority-Low

So just let it be. It's clearly easier to support this feature in certain
phones. Works fine for me on Incredible as infrastructure.

I understand that he feels that, I didnt mean to wine. its just obvious a lot
of people want this... and its put on a bottom priority... I've never even seen
infrastructure as an option and I wasnt aware it was phone specific.

As far as the Droid X and Droid 2 are concerned, the stock paid 3G tether app
broadcasts in infra mode, so it shouldn't be much of a stretch to enable that
mode with wifi-tether.

Droid X 2.2 Rooted user - Would love to be able to get this to work with dd-wrt

soon. I wish I would have looked here before spending 4 hours trying to get my
