ad hoc vs. infrastructure #11

Open GoogleCodeExporter opened 9 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
What steps will reproduce the problem?
1.
2.
3.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?

Please provide any additional information below.

can someone make this a regular access point, instead of ad hoc, the
difference is in the packet of data that carries the ssid, on an access
point it only sends the ssid, on a device it sends the ssid and the device
info, so this should be easy to do

The Thunderbolt does support Infrastructure Mode. I have it and it works great
:)

HTC Sense devices use a custom HTC tether program for infrastructure mode. Is
not the same as the "stock tether" this thread is aimed at.

Please do not post about HTC tether here.

This guy was apparently going to add his fix to make infrastructure mode work.
Well?

I now have a Motorola Triumph. Would love to see infrastructure support for
this phone. If the WiFi tether developer would like internal information of
this phone, feel free to contact me. I'd be happy to help however I can.

development too!

For Photon; FWIW; AP mode driver is in the kernel because the built in app does
put it in master.

I don't think the WiFi chip is the same as Atrix, Atrix can do 802.11a band,
the Photon cannot.

I have rooted my "shitty" Samsung Continuum with the latest Android Wifi-Tether
3.0 beta. I had to use the Samsung Fascinate to do it, but my Toshiba Thrive
will ALWAYS have a connection.

Can anyone confirm that the Samsung Droid Charge is supported with the beta
app? I need infrastructure because as was previously stated, Android Tablets do
not support ad-hoc wifi.

Rather than get a Ph.D in software engineering, I'd rather help "donate" to
ensure that the 3.0 gets out of beta AND that the Samsung Droid Charge (and
(officially the Continuum :) ) is included in the list of profiles available.
I'll gladly root my Charge if we can make this happen and I will help
contribute financially to this development. But we need to make the Priority
HIGH!!! :)

Thanks!

Right now there are a few different configurations for the Motorola Photon that
work in access point mode. My employee and I both have the Photons.

Currently the best option we have is as follows
I'm currently running 3.1 beta 7
Profile: Samsung Galaxy S
Setup Method: Netd (Master)
Encryption WEP
Channel: 4
MSS Clamping: ENABLED

Data Enabler widget: ENABLED
This turns off 3g, so you can only use 4g. I'm not sure about these settings,
but on some other settings I could only get 3g speed. You might try playing
with having this on or not, but I was wanting to test specifically 4g.

I'm currently at 100mb data downloaded from the youtube speed test located here:
http://www.youtube.com/my_speed#

My temperature has maintained steady at 75 degrees, and my bandwidth has
gyrated between 400kbsk and 1400kbps. I'm in a pretty bad 4g reception spot,
and my house does not allow much signal through at that.

I'm running on a fully charged OEM battery plugged into the usb port on my
laptop to maintain charge.

I'll try to remember to update this thread on our current tests.

UPDATE: Our tests are pretty successful. I was able to tether at full 4g
speeds up to 1500kbps (our 4g here is pretty bad). I ran a large torrent for
testing this morning and was able to stay connected for over an hour. Last
night my colleague was able to stay connected for 1.5 hours before a reboot.
Last night I was able to stay connected for 2.5 hours before a phone reboot.

The reboots happen the same way consistently, the phone will buzz like a new
connection has happened then the phone will reboot.

What is the status of this CR? The Transformer Prime has recently received
ICS, and ICS is not compatible with the vast majority of device profiles on
wifi tether. There have been very few successful use cases of tethering ICS
with wifi tether, as ICS seems to have significantly decreased compatibility
with ad hoc networks.

On SAMSUNG EPIC 4G running CM9 ICS beta1, AP infrastructure mode works great
with WPA2.

Device-Profile needs to be set to Epic 4G Touch or other Samsung that gives the
netd option in Setup-Method. Disable force driver reload option to get rid of a
harmless drive load failure error (works fine even with the error).

With windows 8.1 not seeing ad-hoc connections, this becoming infrastructure
has now become a necessity.
