Material pasted into new system shows only "ghostly echo" #178

David Alpher reports "When I attempt to paste material into a new system, only a ghostly echo shows up, unless I precede the offending matter by a barline." I think I've seen this too, where the "ghostly echo" looks like selection highlighting for the invisible symbols; but it doesn't always happen.

It seems to happen only with Paste Merge, not Paste Insert.
