Make the RTS controls a toggle for issuing commands easier, like a regular RTS. This would help anyone who already has experience with RTS controls and holding the shift button feels awkward. In my personal experience this would also make shift-selecting specific units less confusing.
Selecting multiple areas of units at once (Drag box) would also now be possible

A separate hotkey that toggles the command mode, and shift becomes part of the default RTS control mapping (Shift selecting)
Maybe a specific button on the GUI that toggles command mode as well in addition to the hotkey
