Is hmatrix gonna be viable, yes/no?

Status: doesn't look like it's gonna be viable as a one-shot solution. However, we can use it to generate initial guesses in a hodge-podge solution.

looks like we're going in a different direction. quadratic sanity check property tests weren't passing.
