Search Results #4

Hi,

First of all - great plugin. Very empowering for users.

I've been having some problems with search results when I search the library. Essentially, search results don't really line up with the search parameters. I can search for one word, get unrelated books, then search for another word (like an author's last name) and get both books by that author and unrelated books. I've noticed the same issue on your own site - i.e. when I search for "hume" (there's a book by David Hume in your library), it returns three unrelated psychology texts. Is there any way to fix this?

Alternatively, is there any way to index library entries in order to make them searchable by the default Wordpress search feature? It would be much more convenient to have one search box - the same everywhere on the site - that searched through and returned both blog posts, categories, and entries into the library. Is there a plugin that would enable this? I've experimented a bit with "Search Unleashed" which claims it "performs searches across all data, including that added by plugins" but I haven't been able to configure it to return anything from the library.

For reference, my site (in progress) is thebookrook.com.

Thanks for any and all assistance!

Hi,

It seems that you're right. The library search is broken. However, the "manage books" search is working fine, as far as I can tell.

I've added a todo list to fix it. It should work in the same manner as the manage books search does. Basically, the search is done for partial text containing the search string within book titles and authors (as far as I remember). So searching for "hum" should find both books written by Hume and books containing the substring "hum" in them (say "Hummingbird Paradise").

Let's leave this issue open to track this bug here.

Sounds good - thank you for the quick reply!

The manage books search does seem to work well - given what you know, would there then be any way to incorporate the search capabilities of that into the search capabilities of Wordpress's various search widgets? I've tried several widgets in an attempt to allow site users to use one search field for both blog posts and library entries, but none seem to be able to index the data and pages created by your plugin. I'm searching for a workaround (hoping that having the site completely indexed by an outside search engine like google allows an imbedded google search widget in the website to search through everything), but it would be nice to employ and easier solution. Any thoughts?

I don't see an obvious way to achieving that. But I might think of some solution. I agree it would be handy to have a single search method/interface (although searching only books is also useful in many cases, so perhaps one could still explicitly add a book-search interface even when books could be searched via a combined universal searching method).

I'll try to think of some solution and probably add a comment here.

For now I think the search is fixed in the latest version (6.5) which I just released on new year's eve. Unifying search will be the next step.
