app: choosing a new species is now different #598

Open chrisvanswaay opened 1 year ago

chrisvanswaay commented 1 year ago

@kazlauskis Since today there is something different when entering a new species to a 15 min count on the app. In the past (so until yesterday) I would click to add a species, then type a few letters, get some options, and choose one of them, and get back to the general entry page. Today that suddently didn't work at my phone. I click to add a species, then type a few letters, choose a species, but then I remain at this place, it doesn't go back anymore to the previous page. I can use the Android back button to go back though. But when I click the species name again, I get two observations. Anyway, sounds like one of those things that can happen in a beta version.

I use v1.22.0(272) on Asus Zenfone 8 at android 13.

chrisvanswaay commented 1 year ago

@kazlauskis @DavidRoy In addition: strange things happen when trying to upload the data. Some counts are uploaded and moved to the 'Uploaded' tab, others come back after some time (seconds to minutes), reuploading doesn't help. In the overview in the app on my phone it is now a mess: some counts are still 'waiting for upload', some are in the 'Uploaded tab', others have completely disappeared, and interestingly some are now in the 'waiting for upload' AND the 'Uploaded' tab. So all combinations have happened.

The good news: I found all of them at the website (and also only once), so they have been uploaded properly.

Next to this the app now crashed regularly, which did not happen until two days ago. I can't really find a pattern, though it happens most when starting a count. Once some data has been entered it seems to run fine until the end of the count.

I understand I use a new version in beta where problems can occur, but we should avoid these problems getting to a production version. But look forward to this getting repaired, as I must admit it is worrying when your counts seem to have disappeared.

This all started two days ago.

kazlauskis commented 1 year ago

@chrisvanswaay I am sorry for this, you are currently receiving app development versions that are at an earlier stage than the Beta release. I have resolved the issue and you will now receive only stable Beta versions. I am currently working on the next version and will update you soon.

chrisvanswaay commented 1 year ago

@kazlauskis Thanks, but not sure what to do now. We did 14 more counts today, and now I cannot manage to upload even one of them. After pushing upload at a count a circle just keeps on circling. Let me know when and how I can download a stable version. I assume the not uploaded counts remain ready for upload?

chrisvanswaay commented 1 year ago

Hi @kazlauskis , any idea when the update will be ready? I cannot upload any count anymore, and they are piling up on my phone, and I'm getting slightly nervous about them only being on my phone. Thanks for all help.

kazlauskis commented 1 year ago

Hi @chrisvanswaay, I am working on the app this week, and this is top of my priorities right now, but I don't know when an update will be ready. In the meanwhile, I suggest not using the 272 build for recording.

chrisvanswaay commented 1 year ago

@kazlauskis But how can I go back to an old version without loosing my data? When I go to the Play store it tells me I have the latest version and cannot update.

chrisvanswaay commented 1 year ago

@kazlauskis @DavidRoy Can I simply step out of the beta testing program, and install the latest regular version from the play store? Will it keep the counts? I have a field day tomorrow at the Biology of Butterflies congres and would like to show the app, but if it doesn't work of data gets lost, that would be most inconvenient. Is there another way I can save the data otherwise?

kazlauskis commented 1 year ago

@chrisvanswaay Unfortunately, downgrading Android app versions isn't possible. The only option available is to upgrade to higher releases. All your pending records would be wiped if you reinstalled the app to the current Beta or a public one.

If I can reproduce your issues, I can issue a new app release fairly quickly. Can you give me more details of what you're trying to do and how it fails? The more information from this template, the better. In particular:

  1. Exact time when this has happened.
  2. Can you provide the steps of how to reproduce this? For example, are you pressing the 'Upload all button' or trying to upload individually? If individually, are you uploading it from the survey screen or the pending survey list? Pressing the button once or multiple times? For how long is the spinner showing?
  3. Is it only the 15min count survey failing to upload? Are any of these single-species surveys?
  4. What date is the oldest record in your pending list that doesn't upload? This might show us when the issues have started.
  5. Would you happen to have any screenshots?
chrisvanswaay commented 1 year ago
  1. It started five days ago (see first message above), but then I could still upload data. However it got mixed up on the app, but was alright on the website. All counts are there, and only once (as far as I can see). Since two days (see message above) I cannot upload counts anymore. So all the 24 remaining ones are on my phone only.
  2. I do a count, get problems with the entering of the species (but I manage that), and create a normal 15 min counts with numbers etc. Then I try to upload and nothing happens anymore (but the first two days uploading was still working, see 1). I only upload one by one, and it doesn't even work for samples with only 4 butterflies. Pressing the upload button only once, the spinner just keeps turning. I never waited till the end, I simply stop after a minute or two and close the app.
  3. I only have normal 15 minute counts at the moment waiting for upload.
  4. I think the oldest one is from 7 July.
  5. I can make screenshots if you want, but not sure of what. Here are two, one of the list of counts, and one after pushing the one with only 4 butterfleis to upload. Screenshot_20230710-194750723 Screenshot_20230710-194800936
chrisvanswaay commented 1 year ago

@kazlauskis PS it is still spinning, I leave it going to see what happens.

kazlauskis commented 1 year ago

Thanks for the info. I have narrowed down the scope of the issue and created a fix going through our release pipeline. I'm still not 100% sure how this has happened or if the fix will solve this, but let's see. Can you tell me what happens if you fully close the app (i.e. swipe it off the deck of background apps), open it again, and open one of the pending records? Do they appear correct?

kazlauskis commented 1 year ago

@chrisvanswaay, the new app build number with the fix is *274. It should be available in the Play Store at some point. The store can take a while to approve new updates, so you might want to skip that and install the app directly using the link below:

  1. open the below link in your mobile browser
  2. download the 300000274.apk file and open it on your device
  3. the device might show some warnings about installing apps outside Play Store, ignore those and install anyways
  4. open the app

Thanks for letting me know about this. If all of your pending records have been uploaded, I recommend uninstalling the app and downloading the public beta app (version 1.21.0 (260)) through this link: https://play.google.com/apps/testing/uk.ac.ceh.ebms

I am closing this ticket, but I'll continue looking into other problems you've mentioned here.

chrisvanswaay commented 12 months ago

@kazlauskis I fear I have to reopen this. The issue is still there, but usually it works good enough for me to continue using the app, and I also thought it was me alone. However this morning I got this mail from a very dedicated recorder (>600 counts) who seems to have the same problem, however as bad as I had them back in July (see first post). I copy the whole mail in Dutch, I guess you can use google translate or so. I am actually on holiday, and still have these issues in a mild form, which means I manage to deal with them.

Edit by @JimBacon. Translation by Google Good morning Chris, Yesterday I was in Spain and tried to do a count there, but with the update to version 1.22.0 (298) on Android (version 13), Samsung Galaxy S20, things go completely wrong. After starting up I can start a count, but if I want to select a species the App hangs there. I return to the counting screen and it appears that the species has been added. The app crashes after about 45 seconds. I've done that 3 times. Thought this might have to do with location (Spain), but at home in the Netherlands the app also keeps crashing. By the way, if I open the App and do nothing, it also crashes after about 1.5 minutes………… In short, although the season is almost finished, after >600 quarter-hour counts I can't do anything anymore. Do you know what's going on? A quick action to restore the old version is worth considering. Gr Hans

Gr Hans

chrisvanswaay commented 12 months ago

btw I have exactly this version too, so 1.22.0 (298) on android 13, but then on a Asus zenfone 8.

kazlauskis commented 12 months ago

@chrisvanswaay this thread has a few things. Which one of these is the current issue?

  1. App crashing
  2. Species selection doesn't navigate back
  3. Can't upload records
  4. Something else
chrisvanswaay commented 12 months ago

His main issue is the app crashing, he can't use the app anymore.

chrisvanswaay commented 12 months ago

@kazlauskis It all seems to be connected. Main points so far are the species selection and the app crashing. Species selection is not a big thing, once you know it you can use the back button. With me it also crashed after a minute or so, but when I start the app again I see the count as 'concept', and can work on. Could it have to do with Android 13? I know the sovon guys with their avimap has some very weird stuff happening in android 13, and it took them quite a while to figure out what happened (some rights worked the way around then before, or something like that).

Two people who use the app really a lot have this problem, but we realise it is important to continue, but any newcomer would simply move away. And I fear Hans van Gasteren too, if we can't get this fixed. I know this can all be complicated, but it all worked fine until the end of June.

chrisvanswaay commented 12 months ago

Before I forget: so far no problems with me with uploading (until tonight, but that might come from the poor internet here in Italy).

JimBacon commented 12 months ago

Warehouse is offline for updates today so problem with uploading is expected.

kazlauskis commented 12 months ago

@chrisvanswaay does it crash if you open the front page and leave it at that? Or does it only crash after you select something from the species page?

What does the 'crash' look like? Is it like navigating out of the app - like closing the app with the back button, OR is it more like an error crash and some Android system error message appears?

chrisvanswaay commented 12 months ago

@kazlauskis For me just opening the front page is fine, it is stable then. When I enter species it crashes without errors, so as if using the back button. My count is still there as concept.

But not for Hans. Start page now leads to crash and no concept.

could it have something to do with both of us having many counts?

kazlauskis commented 12 months ago

@chrisvanswaay If you don't see a crash error message, then it is quite likely the app simply navigates back out of itself and closes. I'd like to know a bit more about how to reproduce this. Can you both do the following?

  1. upload your pending records
  2. reinstall the app
  3. open the app front page - does the app close itself after 5mins?
  4. start a new survey - does the app close itself after 5mins?
  5. open the species search page - does the app close itself after 5mins?
  6. add a species from the search page - does the app close itself after 5mins?

If, at any step, the app closes, then we can say this isn't about the number of records. We'd also then know a bit more on how I can try to reproduce this issue. Thanks!

chrisvanswaay commented 12 months ago

@kazlauskis Just got a message from Hans van Gasteren. He went to settings, apps, ButterflyCount, and then emptied cache and data (all he could empty), and since then all works fine. Shall I try that too, or shall I follow your steps (though deleting the present app and reinstalling it again comes close to removing all cache and data)?

chrisvanswaay commented 11 months ago

Today the app became unusable, not logging the transect, but it did record the locations of each observation (very strange). I emptied cache and memory, had to login again, and now it works as it should. The app now usus 107Mb, before it was almost 400Mb.

As it happened to two people with >600 counts, it probably has to do with the app trying to store all those counts (and photos?).
