I'm not quite sure I want to cherry-pick this individually, I'm looking into pulling all the updates from upstream, so this might just get closed in favor of that if it tests out to be what we want.

+1 on just pulling everything from upstream. imo we should track them as closely as possible (means we get all their bugfixes)

Not gonna bother figuring out if this is a valid change if we're just gonna pull from upstream. Agreed though that we should just pull from upstream. If that's infeasible, let's discuss first, and we can reopen this PR.
