breveinverteddoublecomb - technical and design questions #2

Open EbenSorkin opened 1 year ago

I was looking at the breveinverteddoublecomb today and I see that it is sometimes to be placed high and have zero width so it can fit between two letters like this

image

But because Merriweather is huge in the em space, an expected position puts it beyond the bounding box. I suspect that I may be able to just increase the 'Win Ascent' value to avoid clipping but I thought I should ask for advice about this.

I also wondered if this mark should take an anchor to have OT code to position it lower if it going over letter pairs that don't ascend. Or maybe that either doesn't happen or isn't an expectation?

This is what I have going now image

I also noticed that when set my verticallinemod it was too tall and clashed with the breveinverteddoublecomb. So I fixed it but, how does it look to you now? Too short again?

Thanks!

The /breveinverteddoublecomb can be positioned for ascenders like you have. It may behave better with some pairs if a bit narrower.

You can test it with the following: ŋ͡m m͡p m͡b ᵑk͡p ᵑɡ͡b n͡t̪ n͡d̪ n͡t n͡d ɳ͡ʈ ɳ͡ɖ ɲ͡c ɲ͡ɟ ŋ͡k ŋ͡ɡ ɴ͡q ɴ͡ɢ k͡p ɡ͡b p͡ɸ b͡β p͡f b͡v t͡θ d͡ð t͡s d͡z t͡ʃ d͡ʒ ʈ͡ʂ ɖ͡ʐ t͡ɕ d͡ʑ c͡ç ɟ͡ʝ k͡x ɡ͡ɣ q͡χ ɢ͡ʁ ʡ͡ʜ ʔ͡h m͡ɸ m͡β ɱ͡f ɱ͡v n͡θ n͡ð n͡s n͡z n͡ʃ n͡ʒ ŋ͡k ŋ͡ɡ ɽ͡r t͡ɬ d͡ɮ t̪͡θʼ t͡sʼ t͡ʃʼ ʈ͡ʂʼ k͡xʼ q͡χʼ

The same applies to its below forms /doublebrevebelowcomb positioned for descenders: ŋ͜m m͜p m͜b ᵑk͜p ᵑɡ͜b n͜t̪ n͜d̪ n͜t n͜d ɳ͜ʈ ɳ͜ɖ ɲ͜c ɲ͜ɟ ŋ͜k ŋ͜ɡ ɴ͜q ɴ͜ɢ k͜p ɡ͜b p͜ɸ b͜β p͜f b͜v t͜θ d͜ð t͜s d͜z t͜ʃ d͜ʒ ʈ͜ʂ ɖ͜ʐ t͜ɕ d͜ʑ c͜ç ɟ͜ʝ k͜x ɡ͜ɣ q͜χ ɢ͜ʁ ʡ͜ʜ ʔ͜h m͜ɸ m͜β ɱ͜f ɱ͜v n͜θ n͜ð n͜s n͜z n͜ʃ n͜ʒ ŋ͜k ŋ͜ɡ ɽ͜r t͜ɬ d͜ɮ t̪͜θʼ t͜sʼ t͜ʃʼ ʈ͜ʂʼ k͜xʼ q͜χʼ

One could make a couple of contextual width variants and position them to always be centered betwen the letters but this may only be necessary in phonetic fonts. Besides phonetic transcriptions, /breveinverteddoublecomb is used in some bibliographic transliteration so may appear in library catalogues. /doublebrevebelowcomb is only used in phonetic transcriptions as far as I know.

I forgot, for the height, since it is a combining mark the font metrics shouldn’t affect it in most cases. Since its use is quite niche, I wouldn’t recommend changing font metrics for it.

Thank you!

I think this is fixed now. Are you happy with the solution Denis?
