LUCKY DUCKS GAME

Final Project

CS 424: Client Side Web Development

Dr. Nicholas Hayward

Loyola University Chicago - Spring 2020

Project

This is the final project for our web design class. It is a JavaScript based web game, where the user must throw pieces of bread at ducks bobbing in a pond. As soon as they feed all the ducks, or the timer runs out, the game ends. Apart from this primary function, the site also has static pages with more information and contact details. We decided to create a game for our final because it was a project both of us had limited experience with. Eliora H had never created a graphics heavy web based game before, and Anna K had only done one in Java. We also wanted to create something that would challenge our skill level, as both of us were confident in our abilities with static web pages before beginning this project. Our goal with this game to find a nice balance between cute, modern, and functional design. We wanted a clean interface, with easy to follow navigation and familiar grid layout. We chose the colors based on the idea of ducks in a pond. The icon at the top is based off of the ducks in the game itself. As far as the design of the game itself, we wanted a retro feel, so Eliora H designed the sprite sheets with an 8-bit aesthetic in mind.

Development

We used the game engine core established in the book Build Your Own 2D Game Engine and Create Great Web Games: Using HTML5, JavaScript, and WebGL, and build our own objects, core game, and sprite sheets.

Contributions

Eliora Horst

In addition to our individual contributions, both of us participated in many paired programming sessions, where we collaborated on the game mechanics in “MyGame.js”, “GameOver.js”, and other parts of the game structure.
