Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Alignment Card #658

Closed emily-humphreys closed 2 years ago

emily-humphreys commented 2 years ago

Description

Development of an SDG Alignment Card. Here is some background on the Sustainable Development Goals https://www.un.org/sustainabledevelopment/

This new card will use all the functionality of a Transition Card, called SDG Alignment Card, with:

Visualisation New to the feature will be the 'roll' for visualization of the Cards due to a large number of targets. The rolled-up goals will display as a progress bar of 'planned', 'actual' and/or gaps (no comments will be ignored and treated as actual) SDG logos will be used to display Goal (see attached) SDG Icons 2019_WEB.zip colors are set out on page 68 [Uploading SDG_Guidelines_AUG_2019_Final.pdf…]()

Mirroring between Transition Cards / SDG Alignment Cards Transition Card / SDG Alignment Cards will share initiatives and the attached partnering organizations. Updates to new Initiatives and new Organisations made on one card will automatically be added to the other.

Reports Reports attached to the SDG will be: Stakeholder Report Activity Report - same logic as Transition Card Comment Report - same logic as Transition Card

Business Value

As a business, Not for Profit, University, or Government Department/s, I want to see the alignment of our activities (Initiatives) working on a chosen wicked problem in a community to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals and 169 Targets. This will enable great visibility of impact to partners and other stakeholders of the activity being undertaken to achieve the SDGs and enable me to report on progress over time.

User Stories

Assigning SDG Feature to an account As a super admin, I want to assign an account with an SDG Feature suite When I create a new or update an existing account, I can select 'SDG feature' in their account settings and this will provide them with access to the suite of SDG features and associated reporting. Upon selection, this feature will be visible in the LHS navigation bar as 'SDG Cards'. The icon will be the negative "SDG circle of goals' SDG-Icons-2019_WEB.zip

Creating SDG Alignment Card As an admin with the SDG feature assigned, I want to create an SDG Alignment Card either by creating a new brand new card or by converting an existing Transition Card. To create a new SDG Card I follow the same breadcrumb as creating a new Transition Card (name/ WP/ Community / Initiatives / Preview) Creating an SDG Alignment Card will enable me to see the contributions of the existing or newly created initiatives that are working on a targeted wicked problem / Opportunity in a community to the 169 targets through comments on how they are addressing them. I share these insights can print and share this card

Mapping and updating targets in SDG Card As an admin, I want to map an initiative to the 169 targets. I select the initiative, either via the card or via the initiative list, and can tick and add comments to the targets. These updates will be logged as activity and comments for reporting. This will enable me to demonstrate my impact on the goals in a detailed and traceable way.

Updating Initiatives As an admin, I want to add a new initiative to an SDG Alignment Card. I select "add new initiative" and complete the template form for initiatives. If I do this via an SDG Alignment Card that is mirrored to a Transition Card it will automatically add this new initiative and the partnering organisations to the associated Transition Card (and vis versa). If this new initiative is added via the initiative page, then I can select which Transition Card and or SDG card I wish to add it to within the account.

Reporting As an admin, if I have the I want to be able to report on activity against the targets. I can download three reports, SDG Stakeholder Reports, SDG Activity Report, and SDG Comment Report. All these reports mirror the logic of the Transition Card reporting.

@emily-humphreys

It doesn't look like this PDF uploaded. The text is "Uploading SDG_Guidelines_AUG_2019_Final.pdf…" and the link doesn't work, Would you be able to upload this file please?

ferrisoxide commented 2 years ago

@emily-humphreys What's the intent behind the Finance, Technology, etc grouping under Goal 17? Are these groups meant to be surfaced anywhere?

emily-humphreys commented 2 years ago

SDG_Guidelines_AUG_2019_Final.pdf

Re Goal 17 - let me check with Sharon

emily-humphreys commented 2 years ago

Okay so re Goal 17: Goal 17 = Focus Area Finance, Technology, Trade, Capacity Building, Systemic Issues = Sub Focus Areas Policy and institutional coherence, Multi-stakeholder Partnerships, Data, monitoring = sub sub Focus Areas

So it's a little different to classic Transition Cards but only for goal 17.

How is it traveling?

Thank you!

ferrisoxide commented 2 years ago

@emily-humphreys

OK, got it

So it's a little different to classic Transition Cards but only for goal 17.

Yeah, but every "little" thing adds a lot of complexity. Is the sub-sub focus areas important for the first cut, or can we come back round to it. I've no idea how this will be represented in the front end, let alone how to manage it from a data POV.

How is it traveling?

All's good. Now we have answers to these I'll be working on this in earnest. Have set aside some time to work on the new card system this weekend.

ferrisoxide commented 2 years ago

@emily-humphreys

Still have an outstanding question here:

Is the sub-sub focus areas important for the first cut, or can we come back round to it?

What impact does the sub-sub focus areas have in terms of presentation or reporting?

emily-humphreys commented 2 years ago

Hi Tom, apologies for the delay.

This has no effect on reporting calculations, it is for display purposes only (just like in the excel list)

ferrisoxide commented 2 years ago

it is for display purposes only (just like in the excel list)

Displaying where? Right now I'm just trying to map the focus areas to goals and keeping the presentation simple. If the presentation of sub-sub goals needs to appear anywhere in the app I'll have to circle back to this once I have a clear idea what you are after.

ferrisoxide commented 2 years ago

@emily-humphreys

The rolled-up goals will display as a progress bar of 'planned', 'actual' and/or gaps (no comments will be ignored and treated as actual)

I'm not completely sure what this means, particularly "no comments will be ignored and treated as actual". The PowerPoint has three colours: red, green and yellow. What do these mean, in relation to the rolled up goals?

emily-humphreys commented 2 years ago

Hi Tom,

Happy to circle back later about the sub + sub system display.

Re comment:

Apologies, ignore the colours on the PowerPoint and the way that looks. That was a first cut that we decided to improve on - in fact what we decided i.e the process bar was a brilliant idea of yours - you must have so many you can't remember :)!!

When we chatted together we discussed that the rolled-up targets would be displayed as a process bar in the colour of the goal logo. I've done a very hack job of visualising it (attached) with two options. I'd really like to go with option 2 as it would utilise the new planning function but will wait for your feedback

If a quick chat today is helpful let me know as I'm around all day

@emily-humphreys @SishaMish I've pushed a very rough cut of the SDG card work up on staging, just to check to see if the data changes doesn't break anything. Sure enough, it's broken things. Currently the system falls over during basic tasks. Will let you know when it's working again.

Love that we have a proof of concept! Now seeing it IRL think the consolidated view of goals will be important (but that’s down the track i know 👍)

@emily-humphreys @SishaMish

Some transition cards are not being display properly - initiatives are repeated and only one 'Actual' indicator is displayed per line (see https://wickedlab-staging.herokuapp.com/transition_cards/26 in the Test Account)

This has been fixed. Fix is currently up on staging. Grids now render a lot faster.

ferrisoxide commented 2 years ago

@emily-humphreys @SishaMish

Rendering of Initiatives form is too slow.

This issue has been resolved and a fix is up on staging. SDG initiatives are now rendering much faster than before.

NB This also introduces some changes to make the comment mechanism more performant and reliable. All up, these changes will make both SDG cards and Transition cards work better. I'm inclined to draw a line here, disable the SDG features and release what we have to production - obviously after thorough QA.

@emily-humphreys Your call here, but I think the speed improvements will improve current users experience of the system. How do you feel about deploying what we have now (after QA)?

emily-humphreys commented 2 years ago

Hi team,

Not completely clear what I need to test here or what the changes are? What are the changes to the comment mechanism - how does this affect TC?

I can see that 'not comments' don't show in the SDG cards - is that what I'm looking at?

Cheers Emily

PS here is the logo to use for the SDG sidebar sdg-wheel let me know if you need me to find a mono / other format option

ferrisoxide commented 2 years ago

@emily-humphreys The changes to the comment system are under the hood, but basically it improves the render speed for the list of checklist items for each initiative. The previous code was slow, as was the rendering of the transition card grid.

The changes should dramatically improve performance of the existing application (i.e. for Transition Cards). I'm suggesting that we deploy what's on staging now as-is to production, but turn off the SDG feature for now.

We would need a QA cycle just to make sure that no bugs have been introduced that would impact the existing Transition Card functionality. The "call" I was after was whether or not you'd be happy to do this. If there's no value in pushing the changes right now then we can just wait until I finish the rest of the SDG features.

ferrisoxide commented 2 years ago

@emily-humphreys Re the logo, thanks for that. Do you want it to be coloured in the sidebar?

emily-humphreys commented 2 years ago

Very cool. Okay, I'll just check to make sure all basic functions are okay. There is a lot of value in doing this ASAP as the TC is taking quite a while to load. My hesitation is doing it before I have a 15 person live training group tomorrow. I'm worried something might break and I dont want to put pressure on you to fix it.

re logo I think for consistency we just leave it as mono

@emily-humphreys @SishaMish

A few improvements to the SDG cards are up on staging.

Notable is a fix for "No Comment" for both SDG Cards and Transition Cards. It looks like the filter / display of items marked as "no comment" (i.e. checked, but no comment registered against the checklist item) has been broken on production.

The fix I've applied is to display a hash pattern over "No Comment" cells. It seems to work well with both Transition Cards and the small SDG Card cells:

image image
emily-humphreys commented 2 years ago

This is really coming together. Few questions:

  1. Can we make these lines slightly thinner?

  2. The "planned" activities on the SDG cards are hard to differentiate between 'Actual' -can we make the colour more transparent?

    Screen Shot 2022-03-07 at 10 45 32 am
  3. Can we put in parenthesis at the Top of the SDG card (like on the transition Cards and Focus Areas) so you can see where the Target tiles start and finish

ferrisoxide commented 2 years ago

Can we make these lines slightly thinner?

Not sure what you mean by "lines". Do you mean make the square shapes thinner, or reduce the height of each Initiative line?

The "planned" activities on the SDG cards are hard to differentiate between 'Actual' -can we make the colour more transparent?

Yep, easily.

Can we put in parenthesis at the Top of the SDG card (like on the transition Cards and Focus Areas) so you can see where the Target tiles start and finish

Yep, shouldn't be an issue.

Just an aside, but given how well these seem to stack on a single page I wonder if we need to "roll up" the per Focus Area section. Even if we squash every Focus Area we don't gain that much in the way of screen real estate - and right now we get a good "at a glance" view of the entire SDG Card.

emily-humphreys commented 2 years ago

Apologies. "thinner lines" refers to the diagonal lines in the "no comment" tile fill. If this could be slightly thinner that would be great.

Re consolidated 'at a glance view' I still think we need this. It has a lot of value to the end-user to see in a uniform and neat way the goals that are being addressed I've added the initial concept for reference SDG Feature.pptx

emily-humphreys commented 2 years ago

PS yes, the Ecosystem Map feature will stay on SDG cards

ferrisoxide commented 2 years ago

The "planned" activities on the SDG cards are hard to differentiate between 'Actual' -can we make the colour more transparent?

I've lightened the colours by 10%. I'm loathe to go any further, as the yellow hues end up being very hard to see.

Can we put in parenthesis at the Top of the SDG card (like on the transition Cards and Focus Areas) so you can see where the Target tiles start and finish

Done. Up on staging for review.

ferrisoxide commented 2 years ago

Cool. Though I'm not sure what the legend is meant to be. E.g. what do the yellow/green/red states indicate?

ferrisoxide commented 2 years ago

Ignore the red / yellow/ green - for use these would be the Goal colours. If one target it has a comment with Actual status saved then this would be represented as this 'one' tile at the consolidated level.

These look great. Just checking that Goal 6 10% blue is the same colour as it looks much brighter?

Re the No comments lines - can we have something in between? I feel this looks too thin now I can see it.

ferrisoxide commented 2 years ago

Apologies, ignore the colours on the PowerPoint and the way that looks. That was a first cut that we decided to improve on - in fact what we decided i.e the process bar was a brilliant idea of yours - you must have so many you can't remember :)!!

I've become less enamoured of this idea the more I've played with it. There are a couple of problems with the "progress bar" idea:

The original thinking (if I remember correctly) was to be able to see all the focus areas "at a glance". With the more compact view for SDG cards I think we achieve that.

In any case, what I thought I'd delivered, per the "SDG.progress.bar.visualisation" document is the preferred model:

image

Though thinking it through, what you are probably looking for is a simply "stacking" of each square on the left hand side of each Focus Area column. This is doable, but at the cost of slowing down screen render. Gah.

We can probably squeeze more into the space by removing borders around each square. Something to discuss tomorrow.

These look great. Just checking that Goal 6 10% blue is the same colour as it looks much brighter?

They are 10% lighter than previously - and ~30% brighter than the base colour as defined in the SDG documentation. The issue is that not all the colours have the same saturation, so as you desaturate (make lighter) some will "pop" out more, and some will fade.

I've made this customizable, so if you go into the focus areas section of the app you'll be able to select the "actual" and "planned" colours. I've included a colour selector widget to make it easier.

NB the values are stored in the database, so if you change a colour in staging it will have to be changed again in production.

Re the No comments lines - can we have something in between? I feel this looks too thin now I can see it.

Done. NB that's as far as I can adjust it - we're down to working with variations of 1 pixel.

emily-humphreys commented 2 years ago

I understand the tension. Thanks for you patience on this. Lets chat tomorrow because it would be good to decribe the value of what we are trying to achieve. We wouldnt need a progress bar or filtering features. We are just trying to show a very 'high level' snapshot - if a target is ticked, then the whole tile (in the snap shot) is coloured. Lets chat tomorrow - I'm sure we can work this out

emily-humphreys commented 2 years ago

An idea...

Perhaps we remove the print button on the SDG feature (as I think it'll be impossible to PDF) and turn it in to 'snap shot' button where we generate a static version of like that in the presentation? Adding this here to discuss tomorrow

ferrisoxide commented 2 years ago

@emily-humphreys @SishaMish Linked scorecards are now up on staging. Go to the Details page of a Transition card and look for the Linked Card field.

NB Only Transition Cards can be linked to SDG Cards and vice versa. When you link cards the Initiatives will be duplicated between each (incl. associated organisations and subsystem tags).

emily-humphreys commented 2 years ago

This is looking great! Looking at this I think we'll need to streamline a process so there is no duplication of initiatives (or at least this is made obvious to the user upon linking)

Open to ideas - but thinking that upon linking perhaps we can provide a pop-up that notifies the user of duplications and lists them?

Assuming that if you wanted to convert a TC to an SDG Card (or vise versa) you'd do the following

  1. Create the new SDG Card card you want to link
  2. When it's created open the Details tab of the Card
  3. Select the TC you want to link it to

Also, can we update the Scorecard terms on the related cards reference either Transition Card or SDG Alignment Card

That sounds fine, though with most things... surprisingly fiddly.

I'm focussing on the network graph at the moment and want to get that done before I tackle anything else. I'm aiming to get to "feature complete" (graph and "rollup" grid), then we can run through the UI / UX and smooth off rough edges.

Re "Compact" view, where each target is flagged on/off if any checklist item in the target (aka Focus Area) is marked as "actual":

The rough cut is on staging and ready for review, as is the rough cut for the Target Network Map.

NB I've move all tickets relating to the SDG feature to a new project milestone "SDG Alignment Cards", with the nominal end date of the 25 of March:

SDG Alignment Cards

The milestone is part of the default project: https://github.com/ferrisoxide/wicked_software/projects/1

I'll be using the project's kanban board (the view separated into Backlog, Scheduled, In Progress, etc columns) to manage the work, including marking tickets as Ready for QA.

Aside from filtering for Initiatives / Organisations on the Target Network Map, I believe we are pretty close to being feature-complete. There are many rough edges to file down, but it will help if we all use the kanban board as our shared view of the state of the project.

If tickets need to be added, please make sure the tickets have been assigned to the "Wicked Lab App Development" project, and added to the "SDG Alignment Cards" milestone. The sidebar for each ticket should look something like this:

@emily-humphreys

A question re the "compact" view, from my notes the grid should display a solid bar in the Target's colour if any of the checklist items in the Target have been marked as "actual".

Do I have this correct?

Yes this is correct

@emily-humphreys @SishaMish I'm marking this as "ready for testing" as the SDG Card itself appears feature-complete. The outstanding work for the graph can be tracked against #674 - and other tickets for tracking smaller features / bugs.

I'm keen to get what is on staging now QA'ed and deployed to production - or at least merged to the master branch. All the small bug fixes / features are getting hard to track and it would be good to "baseline" what we have.

Agreed - lets get what we have on production and any small changes can be done via other tickets

Deployed to production. Ongoing work to be carried in other tickets. Closing.
