Cursor issue in the main menu #1795

After update OS to Debian / Gnome from i3, found that cursor not available in main menu.

I have tried to recompile from latest sources but no results..

Any ideas how to return it back? I can launch the game / navigate menu with keyboard only.

Is it just invisible or the engine doesn't read the mouse input at all?

Do you use AppImage, Flatpak or compiled engine from the source? Do you use the latest version? Does GNOME in your configuration uses Wayland?

Just invisible I can intuitively focus menu elements, but can't capture as don't know where is current position

I'm using master branch. It worked before and stopped once, not sure when exactly, maybe after Gnome install How can I check the wayland?

I think these days GNOME is Wayland-only but you can try forcing SDL using it: SDL_VIDEODRIVER=wayland ./xash3d -dev 2 -log

and post engine.log file here

Hm, I don't see anything suspicious here.

I will try spinning up Debian with GNOME at VM and try to reproduce the bug.

It's Debian 12 from netinstaller.

Not sure the OS dependency, I've used i3/X before without any issue, then installed Gnome with tasksel and found xash3d-fwgs launcher without cursor now. I think that is desktop environment update, maybe Wayland dependency

Sometimes I have this crash/error on select Network game, sometimes it works after launcher restart..

Maybe the issue not related but anyway. Something get wrong, tried to recompile from master and grab original game files from steam but no luck.

Yeah, it's a bug in mainui_cpp's CMenuTable. I've fixed it locally but didn't pushed a fix yet.

This isn't really a crash, but a broken assert(). Asserts are evil!

It's happened because some server uses wrong protocol data? Would be useful to push because I can't launch a game :)

The engine was pretty stable before but now lot of issues, for example I don't see background image in launcher menu.. Can the engine store config cache somewhere in .cache, .config or .local folders? Maybe I can clean them to fix cursor issue after system upgrade.

It's just pure black? Latest Half-Life update (the one they made in 2023) adds new high definition background, but they also replaced old background with black textures.

  1. Check mainui_cpp submodule is up-to-date (you can check that in git status command). The fact that it's outdated might be the cause of your cursor issues.
  2. You can try removing gameinfo.txt in valve folder, engine will re-generate it from liblist.gam.

I believe that most users got used to the fact that engine never stores anything outside of directory where it resides, so there wasn't anything added for that. It's somewhat possible to set up XASH3D_RODIR this way, but XASH3D_RODIR is known to break mods.

Could I check some option in the menu as can't find there nothing related about cursor issue. Love this engine but still keyboarding to play..

Maybe I should ping some Xorg or Wayland server components status? But I'm absolutely not familiar with that and don't know how exactly these servers work to check or dig the logs. I'm using regular Debian 12 netinstall image but after upgrade to GNOME desktop from server with i3/wm installed before.
