Icon Request: Excel, PDF, Word, PPT and most common file types #991

Closed ghost closed 10 years ago

ghost commented 11 years ago

I'd like to see Excel and PDF icons based on the basic file icon (icon-file)

LarryAzevedo commented 10 years ago

@davegandy We haven't heard from you in a while. Could we at least get an update on this topic? I'm sure everyone would really appreciate it. Cheers!

Rigent commented 10 years ago

@Fatbat there are 47 different brand icons, I don't think worrying about there being an infinite number of file type icons is an issue. There are other icon types - like the brands - where the issue is the same, people can keep requesting brands over and over, no matter how obscure.

There are a core of 5-10 that are in most icon sets or fonts and would satisfy most people, anything more than that would be down to individual requests. There are many comments in this discussion about what file type icons are most desirable - Text, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PDF, Image, Archive, Audio, Video being the most common.

It's been 10 months and nothing's happened. I assume there is a reason behind not having file type icons even if it's purely personal. I don't need to know what it is but it would be good if this issue could be resolved as yes or no.

ghost commented 10 years ago

Meanwhile, I've created an alternative font. You can load it separately, just like the font-awesome. The icons names start with icon-file-. I've uploaded them to wetransfer. So it will be online for a limited time. Let me know what you think ! https://www.wetransfer.com/downloads/25950e378fbbad0f964e1b6c67caecdd20140217185024/a4050cb74c5747a3dabd6a975ba951c420140217185024/4eb91a

npgauth commented 10 years ago

Very nice @vcmirko Thanks! Do these have a specific license? I do still wish everything was in one package..

ghost commented 10 years ago

No, no license, de icons come from icomoon as a free pack, I just resized them to 14px (instead of 16px) and packed them into font and rewrote the css.

Fatbat commented 10 years ago

@atstockland where's all this snapping you're talking about? I don't see it. I see people requesting new icons for what is probably the most widely used set of open source icons. Something the author has SPECIFICALLY ASKED the community to do. What's so hilarious about that exactly? The set has some rather glaring omissions and it would be that much more useful for everyone if those holes were filled. So instead of coming in here and shooting off your mouth about how ungrateful everyone is, why don't you just keep it to yourself, ok? How's that for snapping?

bjohnson045 commented 10 years ago

I think the argument about how there are so many different file types doesn't make sense because font awesome already has "brand" icons. Just as brand icons have been added for only the most popular brands, file type icons can be added for only the most popular types.

hades200082 commented 10 years ago

"Just as brand icons have been added for only the most popular brands" - atdev2

... and some not so popular (or mostly unknown) brands. Gotta wonder why they got included ;)

romainr commented 10 years ago

If it helps, we have also re-implemented some common file type icons: http://gethue.tumblr.com/post/77209676786/how-to-use-the-new-file-types-icons-with-the-hue-sdk-or

bespired commented 10 years ago

I thought freedom of speech also implied criticism. Seems we are still a long way away from cyber bullying.

I do agree the file type obmission is a widely gap that's questionable not filled. But I don't see why that could be the only valid opinion.

strichter commented 10 years ago

Why don't we turn the request around and ask for new brand icons: Adobe, Excel, Word, etc. Then we can overlay those icons with the generic fa-file-o icon.

Maybe @davegandy will like that better. ;-)

LarryAzevedo commented 10 years ago

@strichter LOL... love it! Man, you should be a lawyer or better yet, in public relations.

vsimonaitis commented 10 years ago

+1 for Office and PDF icons

hades200082 commented 10 years ago

Maybe we should email Microsoft and Adobe and ask them to offer @davegandy a free version of office/some adobe product if he adds them. Seems the only way some of the other brands got added was by offering services in kind for the privilege.

vsimonaitis commented 10 years ago

The items might by quite abstract and not related to particular products. LibreOffice and Google Drive somehow overcame copyright issues.

Would love to see some common filetypes, to avoid the common infinite problem, use a popular known limited set like apache etc.

I am particularly fond of the gnome ultimate ones, but even they were missing some I had to make custom. https://sites.google.com/site/ultimate-gnome/

If fa was extensible or modular then filetypes could be an addon, i also see no need for the brands , most of which are startups and will be gone in 5 years probably.

Fatbat commented 10 years ago

This really is a no brainer. Most other major icon sets are sporting file types. I don't understand why this author refuses to participate in these discussions.

hades200082 commented 10 years ago

Probably because there's no money in it for him. I bet most of the relatively unknown brands mentioned by @tablatronix paid him for inclusion.

bespired commented 10 years ago

Its called fontello. Fontello also allows for a personal selection of fonts, so you don't need to include the bloated font-awesome.

Fontello also takes your single shape svg and converts that into a glyph. You can rename and renumber ( assign utf-8 ) to own wishes. And reload your settings by uploading the supplied json...

tagliala commented 10 years ago

Please be nice, guys.

If you need file types or deselect unneeded brands, you are free to customize FontAwesome at http://fontello.com/ or http://icomoon.io/app/#/select

PS: I heard that facebook paid 1B$ to Dave: that was the change from its acquisition of WhatsApp...

Fatbat commented 10 years ago

^^ but that's hard work. I was hoping someone else would do the heavy lifting for me.

tablatronix commented 10 years ago

fontello is not v 4 i do not believe, 3.1.1 maybe ?

bespired commented 10 years ago

Hahaha... And there you hit the core.

fontello and icomoon use v4, I can see the vimeo and wheelchair icons introduced in 4.0.

the one left behind is http://icnfnt.com/, stick at 3.0.2. https://github.com/johnsmclay/icnfnt/issues/19

Anyway, icnfnt is for subsetting only so it can't be used to extend fontawesome...

tablatronix commented 10 years ago

oops my bad, i was looking at an old svn somehow.

Adding to 4.1.0 milestone. These aren't top priority, but they're very high. Haven't decided which subset of filetypes to include just yet, but it should be at least 5 or 6, if not more.

Rigent commented 10 years ago

Thanks Dave, much appreciated! It will be great to use Font Awesome as a single solution for icons in web apps.

negri commented 10 years ago

Great news, Dave!

Many thanks!

It´s much easier to use only one solution!
