Icon Request: Excel, PDF, Word, PPT and most common file types #991

Closed ghost closed 10 years ago

ghost commented 11 years ago

I'd like to see Excel and PDF icons based on the basic file icon (icon-file)

tagliala commented 10 years ago

@paulxtiseo AFAIK almost all brand icons were created after a request. I know that nobody requested maxcdn, but max maxcdn is hosting fontawesome and Dave added that.

Maybe brands are not useful for you, but they are useful for others, so please be nice towards them too. E.g: #329

paulxtiseo commented 10 years ago

@tagliala: So, brand icons were requested and then created. The icons in this ticket are heavily requested and ignored. Why the lack of consistency? Can you actually explain it? Also, given the votes, it would seem these icons would be useful to many, probably more than many of the brand icons. Again, what I suspect many see is an inconsistent approach. That is what I meant by lame; not that the brand icons shouldn't exist or be part of the set, but rather that it is a weak justification that the icons in this request are too varied or some other reasons put forth in this ticket.

So does the PDF and Doc icons. Yet we can't have them.

File type icons are really useful for a lot of people vice versa.

If "ignored" stands for "has a lot of +1 but it is still opened", there are hundreds of ignored requests and this one is the most ignored one.

You complained about brand icons and I tried to explain why there are lot of minor brands (and currencies) but file types/charts are still missing. Reference: https://github.com/FortAwesome/Font-Awesome/issues/171#issuecomment-22045449 and https://github.com/FortAwesome/Font-Awesome/issues/171#issuecomment-22052354

@angkec

File type icons are really useful for a lot of people vice versa.

Sure, and the number of requests here proves that!

I'm just giving a personal opinion about this request, while trying to keep FontAwesome a happy place

angkec commented 10 years ago

Yeah I appreciate that. Meanwhile I'll try to fork font awesome this weekend if I have time. All I need that is missing is the two icons.

+1 to Excel and PDF: in the financial word one can't avoid to implement "export" in these formats.

angkec commented 10 years ago

Anyone has a good idea how to make icons that can be integrated into a font awesome fork? I'm willing to work on the fork but I'll need some basic instructions of how to make those icons.

Well this has been open 9 months and despite the fact a billion people want some icons, looks like it will never happen. Sad times.

I know, I think I want my money back. I think all 'billion' of us should ask for our money back!

The way I see it an hour of sass can take us a long way. Just add a doc and some brands in fontello and some sass. Only thing I'm missing is a zipper.

But on a more critical note: It's rather weird.

"Not being able to make them all" FA is far from having all brands. It just has most social and a few US computer/web brands. Why not add MS and Adobe? Legal copyright issues maybe? Or just not include Google patent competitors?

Why not create our own font ?
I just need a graphics guy to create me svg files (or adobe illustrator) for each icon.
I'm more than happy to do it.

ghost commented 10 years ago

Meanwhile, I found an illustrator file with icons for most popular filetypes. I'm converting them into a font that we can use like font awesome icons.

Rigent commented 10 years ago

There are apps like Icomoon that allow you to import the Font Awesome icons and combine them with other font icons, but right now the Font Awesome system is the best around and matches up nicely to Bootstrap, if you're using that. You could copy across the utility classes from FA into the new stylesheet generated by Icomoon, but in my experience that never works as well because the combined icons behave less consistently than a purpose-made set.

The biggest hurdle I've found with trying to add or supplement the FA with file type icons from another font is that I haven't found one that's 14px-based. Trying to add the Font Awesome icons, or a selection of them, to a new font with 16px-based file type icons from another font leads to inconsistent alignments in positioning and of course the different optimal sizes create their own issues.

Right now my solution is to use FA and additionally load in selected file type icons using Icomoon . It means 2 different fonts to load, 2 different sets of styles, and making sure they are used appropriately to avoid sizing and alignment differences. It's a bit of a pain but it can work.

I appreciate Dave Gandy's efforts and Font Awesome for just existing and being literally awesome, but I can't think of a reason why file type icons aren't included when they are a staple of almost every font set or icon.

ghost commented 10 years ago

Rigent, exactly. I've done just that. I found the icomoon icons, which included svg's of a few filetype. I've exported to a new font and adjusted the css a bit to include some common file extensions. Just need a way to share this.

Fatbat commented 10 years ago

@davegandy while there may be an infinite number of file types, there are really only a dozen or so that everyone regularly uses. On top of these you could add a selection for web development file types, (HTML, PHP, CSS, JS, etc.) and the Adobe file types and I think you would make 99% of the people happy.
