Fusion-Power-Plant-Framework / bluemira

Bluemira is an integrated inter-disciplinary design tool for future fusion reactors. It incorporates several modules, some of which rely on other codes, to carry out a range of typical conceptual fusion reactor design activities.

Resisitive TF coils power loss #140

Description

Alongside superconducting magnets, resistive magnets are considered for STEP design. The PROCESS code already have this option inside to design it.

As the resistive power losses in the coil is invertly proportionnal to its cross-section, the inboard mid-plane section of the coil is thinner than the top one. This tapered geometry is considered and parametrized in PROCESS and would conflict with the TF coil ripple shaping and the future TF out of plane load optimisation in blueprint.

The resistive magnets cooling properties are also considered in PROCESS given as it sets the conductor temperature as a function of the coolant and conductor thermal properties the coolant velocity and the cooloing channel size and fraction.

Currently, all the PROCESS STEP designs are based on resistive magnet as @sebkahn did not managed yet to get a superconducting design working and fitting the available inboard mid-plane space.

Proposal

Add the power required to cool and lost into the magnets in BLUEPRINT so it can take this into accout in the coil shaping for resistive magnets. For this, feel free to contact @sebkahn for any help.

The fact that the TF current carrying layer changes with the height is also an important bit to add. For no starting is available for now, sadly.

@sebkahn @shaildesai96 could we rationalise between this issue and #179, please?

This issue focuses on calculating the resistive heat and power loss, so different from https://github.com/Fusion-Power-Plant-Framework/bluemira/issues/179 that focuses on geometry only.
