Starting this as a feature request/discussion topic for a low data version that would better support GSM comms. This would allow for low cost solar stations to be placed remotely where noise floors are lower. Fixed price SIM cards now exist for this type of application at a rate of approx $10/500MB (e.g. the 1NCE SIM). Currently, over wifi I'm seeing around 1.5MB/day but I suspect the number may be a little higher
I see this in two stages
Look at optimisations to reduce data usage
Integrate optional GSM module support
In terms of data usage, a quick look suggests
Reduce NTP update interval
Cache satellite settings and call with a simple command e.g. a topic for which satellite to tune with a specific memory number (would require back end change)
Reduce MQTT interval (especially if refreshing non-satellite data)
Add the ability to push an OTA rather than an automatic load (e.g. you may skip most updates unless critical)
Retain dashboard on local AP
I'd like to see some pull requests on this, starting with a low data flag on the front end that we could then associate with efforts.
