And there it is... hahaha, @fuzzytrees you're a god. So, just need 2 more (7 weapons total) and @DanielTheBard can start laughing at me. In which case, we'll punt bows to our future Ranger class.
Gawd damn! within hours
@fuzzytrees - I love it, already! :D Not sure about the nun-chuck though? Might just be me.
I'd never laugh at you @lefnire ;)
@lefnire * blushy-face *
@DanielTheBard I'm not deeply pleased with the nun-chuck either, just wanted to put it out there. Glad you can tell it's a nun-chuck, though!
If anybody wants to mess with those rogue weapons, go for it, I won't be able to work on them for a couple days.
SCREAMS SCREAMS SCREAMS THOSE ROGUE WEAPONS
THOSE ROGUE WEAPONS
I am sick and dead and those new rogue weapons just MADE my DAY omg @fuzzytrees AMAZING
i thought of rouges with fancy blades and my mind wandered to hook swords! so here's my attempt at them ^_^
i don't know if i need more contrast in the shading to define the blade better.... let me know what you guys think ^^; it's hard trying to do details on such a tiny level.
a note on its placement: the pixel that serves as the hand holding the weapon needs to be the one to the outside of the current one used for the other weapons. otherwise the gap is covered up and it looks pretty bad on the higher level rouge armors.
I think that these look great - though I do agree that some shading is needed!!
I think we have our full rogue class set now :)
@crystalphoenix - Is it possible to make them any more pointed in appearance? They kind of almost look like a staff to me because they seem kind of round at the tip.
@lemoness We're still a 7th weapon short. And I know @fuzzytrees and I didn't know how we felt about the nunchuck. But I do think we're very close! :)
Was actually just doing some more work (ended up with a little free time I didn't know I'd have).
The hook blade could replace the nun-chuck here (since it doesn't make a lot of sense for it to go blade blade NUNCHUCK! blade):
(edited to actually add image) (ok, don't know why that's being weird. just click the link)

@fuzzytrees I love you. That's awesome! For those sickle-esque, curved knives, I think I like the smaller one? And it makes sense stepping up to the hook blades from that. Just a little confused on the very last blade you have.
It's supposed to be a blade that works ok when you have one, but when both are fully upgraded, it turns into a double-ended sword/katana. I would like to do it diagonally, but there's no way for it to make sense as both a single and a double that way.

OH, I see it now! :) I was confused at first. I'm like... did he get blades for hands? aha
But basically, if the hook blade could match a little more and be a little more pointed, I think the set would be fantastic.
I also like the smaller hook blade. I was also a little confused about the final blade set, and frankly, I still am - having trouble reading it visually...
@DanielTheBard @lemoness tweaked it a bunch, improved the shading, and hopefully got the curved shapes better this time round. tried to follow my references better and put the crescent blade on the guard and the slight s-curve on the hook. i hope i succeeded in doing the hook sword justice ^^; oh! i hope it's ok that i didn't use @fuzzytrees blade colors. they were too light on this 1px wide blade to make a visible difference ^^;;;
@fuzzytrees like your idea of the double-wielding weapon combing to form one~ but have to agree about it being hard to parse it as such :( i also vote smaller hook blade ^_^ it reminds me of Sokka's boomerang XD
Wizard "shields": Staff in one hand and some kind of orb or crystal in the other hand would be badass.
Oh, these are fantastic! I love how the hook swords have developed: the first ones I saw I thought, "dual wielding paper clips?" but @crystalphoenix's last are instantly recognizable.
I would like to suggest that one of the intermediate curved blades be tweaked a bit to be recognizable as a khukuri! If it possible because pixels, heh.
Wow this thread's been busy while I was away. Sorry if I opened a can of worms back there guys. I do still love the bows, but I'm also loving these new daggers.
@SabreCat - I agree with you on the wizard stuff :) I was thinking they could have an increasingly powerful series of magical implements in their "shield" hand. Like an orb, skull, tome, rune, relic, etc. Idk! :) Also agree on the hook swords. They're looking much better :) As for the kukri idea, I think the third dagger looks close to one. It might be a better blend into a kukri. Fourth blade, looks closer to a sickle to me. Kind of.
Hook blades looking VERY nice! We had some earlier mage orbs posted above - let's run with some of those!
@crystalphoenix @fuzzytrees heads up on size issues we're currently hitting on the daggers https://github.com/HabitRPG/habitrpg-shared/issues/37#issuecomment-29430566 . We should be able to solve them, but might wanna keep any future work as-wide-or-smaller than what ya've got, just in case
How about a sword for the rogue ?
@the-entropist - Nice, but it's much too big and doesn't really fit in with the style of the dagger set that's been done so far.
Yeah just saw the difference after posting it.

Random thought - you know the dragon hunter gear how it has a flaming aura for what I'm guessing is a sort of shield? Would that maybe be a thing for the mage gear? Some kind of aura as a shield?
Rolling with the knives, they're amazeballs: video showing them in action. Anyone wanna take a stab at mage off-hands?
Nice video, @lefnire
I've been attempting to make object-shields for the mages, but I am not having very much success making objects that are both recognizable and the correct size (grump grump grump). Maybe we should just do shields, translucent if possible.

@fuzzytrees : No pressure, we can roll without if needs be (current setup) - but might be fun to have the off-hands. @RosemonkeyCT has some bad-ass starters here. Do whatever you think looks cool, your art is always magnificent
just brainstorming on those mage shields and though of spells on the off hand. these arn't very good and need a lot of adjusting and coloring >.> but they're a start of an idea i guess ^^;; wanted some feedback before giving them another go. one of my concerns is how recognizable they are and their visibility against the robes...
fire, water, lightning, poison, ice thingys :
maybe @RosemonkeyCT would have better luck at this judging by that mini Roy and the symbols that were posted before?
Nice @crystalphoenix try adding a black border to those spells, should make them more visible (especially the lightning one.
There we go, 8216828 implements two-handed enforcement when using staves, so we can take our time on wizard off-hand and add them once we get a solid set
Ah, @fuzzytrees i see why I missed the images - missed the visual when scanning. For some reason, Github is really inconsistent about editing already-submitted posts with markdown (works fine on creation). Here we go:
Hey @crystalphoenix your icons look great. The black border will make them stand out better. I used three colours on the Roy Gif flame - red, yellow and white. But there's no need to make it too complicated - the style you've used looks much better fitting with the overall style of HabitRPG. I especially like the snowflake ^^
PS. @crystalphoenix as far as my pixel work goes, I just got home from hospital like 3 hours ago - I'm not feeling too poorly, but I don't know how the next few days on my new medication will pan out. Seriously, your work's always wonderful. Just go with what feels right.
Reworked the final level mage staff because it needed to be fancier.
Very fancy indeed! Very opalescent, which is what I was going for :)
Crystal, I like the spells! Experimenting with outlines will help give them more definition - they can be darker colors, not black - and some shading will go a long way as well. Good luck!
fire, poison, ice v2! and showcased on the mage armor it melts into the most. i'm undecided on whether the sparkle bits on ice is too much or not.
thanks for the advice everyone :3
Those look great. I know what you mean about the sparkles. They look ace, but they do get a bit lost. I love the poison one!
@fuzzytrees I really like the daggers/knives, I just don't really understand the last one in @lefnire 's post. It looks a bit like wings to me. Also I think the blue nunchucks look a bit fat and that is why I think I would prefer the grey ones with a rounded border at the bottom. Otherwise I think these look really cool!
@crystalphoenix While I really like the way the spells look when not on the player, I still think they merge too much with the player. :x While you might be able to darken the border further in order to stop this from happening (although I think you will end up with black) I wonder how the sparkles could be saved :( A possible solution might be animations? But I think it will always depend on the underlying armor.
@Pandoro I hear ya on the last weapon. Over on Trello, @lefnire commented that it was too big anyway, so I'll work on it.
The spells look way better! But Pandoro is right, they do still blend in. Maybe they can be our icons for when we cast spells?
Could you animate them perhaps to make them stand out?
only had time to mess with poison today, but another try with 2a2a2a outline. the clashing of colors is unavoidable in the case of sparklies ^^; but the animation does help cuz of the movement :D tho they may not be appropriate for the default mage sheilds since the only animated things out at the moment are backer/contributor things.
Oh that looks great. I guess it's a matter of consensus with animations, but I think it's worth looking at for magic. the ice sparkles definitely would be helped if they could be animated.
Hmmmm @lefnire what is your consensus on the technical feasibility of animated mage shields? I seem to recall that you had to do a work-around for the backer/contrib gear.
The workaround is that they're outside the spritesmith system. We save gifs in a separate directory and add custom css-handling for each gif, making sure the filenames match the object keys (spritesmith gives us auto-mapping, which is much less error-prone). So gifs are not ideal. We can use them, if people get excited around a particular img / set of images, then by all means we won't rule them out - but when possible, let's try png first. In this case, let's see how much traction @crystalphoenix's shields get. (incidentally @Pandoro and I are mulling on a voting / pipeline setup for contributed art)
I'm trying to think of other ways to help those sparkles stand out. The difficulty is the brightness of the colours being so strong across the board, there's no contrast against what could be a solid thing or an ethereal thing, if that makes sense. Maybe tweaking the toning of the colours a little? So the shades of reds used for, say, the mages robes were in some ways noticeably different to the shades of red used in the flaming ball? I'd also maybe try a darker blue for the sparkles, the cyan's a brilliant colour for what it's trying to do, but it's struggling to stand out against both the darker shades of the uniforms and the white background. I think, where possible, consistency works - I do love the animation! But I also love things to fit a pattern, and I expect if mages were given animations and nobody else could do the same that might cause a little unsettlement. Might - I'd still be happy as a healer, I'm usually more of a rogue-type person but I prefer the healer outfits and weaponry (not the shields - the fact that those are my shields does not impact my preference, I swear!)
Also @lemoness did you receive my email for the permissions form?
@lefnire, I recall Shaner worked out how to do animations with CSS spritesheets. Would probably cause dataoverhead and computation overhead, but it would also have other advantages I think. Back then it really looked good PLUS you get an alpha channel which gifs don't have.
The idea was to store the frames manually and just switch between them. The nice part about GIFs is that they are self contained and you don't need extra switching code. But if we plan to go for more animations it might pay off in the end.

@Shaners just wanted to let you know that your crystal armor isn't fully formed under the helm. it looks like there's a cutout in the collar/shoulder area. XD i only noticed since i prefer to run helm-less most times ^^;
hmm... well however you guys choose to implement animations, i'll just try and focus on their still versions for now and leave the animating for after that's sorted out ^_^
@crystalphoenix, I also noticed this. I think we will have to rework some of the gear a bit and make a guideline that gear without the helm also looks good.

I don't know if you're still looking for spell icons but I tried out a couple more burst of speed tools of the trade What started out as an attempt for tools of the trade but now it's just a generic disguise type thing
redid fire and ice with 2a2a2a outlines too. it seems to only make a tiny difference, but it's better than nothing ^^;
and i worked on water too ^_^ and i know i said i'd focus on their still forms... but animated water really wanted to get out of my head >.>
That animated water is super cool!
