Ohhhh wow that's brilliant!!!
@lefnire @lemoness copying these over to here in case you need them on this thread - the redesigns requested for the healer shields.
Hi people !
I was making a war hammer (just because I was bored) and had an idea : how about an aura around the weapon when a spell had been cast ? (or changing the color of the blade ?) Very small, only few pixels of colors depending of the spell.
I'm unsure of the possibility to implement it without a full mess, but if so, is it an idea which pleases you ?
problem is it would require a redesign of each weapon to include the aura, which would be a scalability problem going forward (as well as double the sprite size). For buffs, I think we should instead see about a CSS trick using background shadows or the like.
I've got a special request (@Aiseant @RosemonkeyCT @crystalphoenix @fuzzytrees @baconsaur, whoever's up for the challenge). Actually, @Aiseant might be up your ally as you'll see in a bit.
I'd like a heavy warhammer designed. Possibly even two-handed (can span the avatar's 90x90, holding it sideways or the sort). Something that speaks "Bug Squasher", "This champion slew a critical github foe where many warriors fell. Fashioned from the bones of #1057, this hammer deals a mighty critical hit" (getitgetit?). We've got one @colegleason hot on the heels of #1057, one of Habit's most vexing historical bugs, and if he pegs I'd like to reward him something extra. #1499 would be one of these GH bosses too. Any of those 8mo-in-the-queue, 50 "me too"s, no-fix-in-sight bugs.
what'dya'think?
Well, this is what I made yesterday (was just fooling around)
It's not exactly of the "extra reward" kind (mean, shade armor and helmet are over-cool, for instance) and still need some work, but anyway.
I think anyone helping hrpg deserves reward, and smashing those horrible bugs is something very precious (especially since it's one of the most difficult contrib, imho, and seems to be one of the less offered).
I cannot say I'll manage to make an honorable war-hammer for your champions (I'll try), but if other artists want to make some, go for it. Worse case scenario is too many of good war-hammers, and @lefnire forced to attribute more rewards :)
About the aura stuff I suggested : if I understand correctly, the technical problem is resizing the item, and not displaying something different because a spell has been cast ? If so, slightly changing the color of the blade of weapon would be possible ... I'll make some test to see if it looks as well as I imagined. I'll be back ;-)
Beautiful hammer! And not a bad worst case scenario if you ask me, I'd love to attribute more rewards to all you lovelies for your amazing, amazing contributions.
@Aiseant Well, not quite a technical limitation, but a scalability problem. What I mean by that is, if casting a buff means a modified weapon sprite, we'll need to do that for every weapon - as well as each new weapon added to the system would need to be modified (and new pixelists would have to know about that). So I'm wondering if we can instead use CSS3 image filters to adjust hue / saturation, add a drop-shadow (do they work on transparent pngs?), etc. That way we can achieve the same effect with no extra images
What about, instead of modifying the weapon, maybe have an aura or spinning circle on the ground under the character sprite/mount (and maybe pet)?
Example:
@lefnire : CSS3 filters was the way I was going, but I'm afraid it would request an image filter for each weapon anyway, if we want something clean (or at least several ones, considering than the same filter can be applied to different items). This is what I'm experimenting right now, obviously you need to change parameters if you want similar effect on the basic sword and one of the magic staff, for instance.
@zoebeagle : I'm not sure this option solves the technical problem, but it's another way to do it, yes.
Making an aura behind the character, as I firstly intended to is basically adding a layer to the character display (like you have one layer for the face, one for the helmet, one for the armor and so one). Am I right ?
As I said, maybe it's not a valid idea. Or not something important enough for the amount of work it required.
@Aiseant Well, if the animation/underlay could be applied to the character and not the weapon, wouldn't it cut down at least having to go through each weapon?
Edit: nevermind, I didn't finish reading your last post :)
@zoebeagle : it would certainly cut it down, yes. But I'm afraid it would be like resizing the character anyway, or addind a layer to it. And it would mean to distinguish when you're on a mount or not, and if you have a pet or not.
actually, if we placed a ring (PNG or animated GIF) right under the character, that could work. The bottom position of full-sprite-getup is always the same, so if they're on a mount it might look awkwardly small under the mount's body, but not too terrible. Here's an alternative buffs visual proposed by @Shaners a while back. And 'course, if you're already trying out css3 image filters @Aiseant I'm curious how it all looks. Anyway, I'm not helping the convo I'm just dumping a bunch of random ideas, ignore me :)
Messed around with this on my lunch hour. Probably not quite as extravagant as you were looking for, but might be usable for something. Played around with animation a bit, just to see if I could.
Threw this together because I liked this design idea, feedback would much appreciated!
Hm, interesting! Is that a weapon of some kind? Right now we aren't in dire need of any new weapons, but it's good practice. One thing I would suggest for the future is having a less saturated color palette and experimenting with some shading. Keep at it!

I'm back, and I brought a Goblin-related submission for Goblin Week! (http://goblinweek.tumblr.com/) I made a little Habit Goblin, and all of his gears. The gears here are at 40x40, which is what I found on the wiki, but I'm assuming you also need a 90x90 version?
Hi! I'm new around here, I love doing pixel art though and I'm wondering what are the limitations?
Hello everyone, I heard You're making RPG game...
Also have few sketches of elemental armors, but I'm still working on them.
Hi everyone! i'm also new around here, but would like to contribute to this wonderful web app and if someone could help me out and/or give me something to work on?
RESPONSES! Sorry, I’ve been really busy.
Popitop – Cool goblin! I’m a fan. Go ahead and send me an email at Leslie@HabitRPG.com for the permissions form so that we can make the goblin a boss for a battle! One issue – the armor image is broken. Can you try reuploading that one?
zoebeagle – I missed commenting on your hammer, but it is SUPER great!
Lukreja – Very nice! A little bit of feedback: for HabitRPG, all the art has a dark outline. Could you try adding a dark outline to the horns, as well as perhaps some additional shading, and reupload the art at the correct resolution (300% zoom?)
Rev-C and PurpleKoalas – Hi, welcome! Right now we don’t actually need much in terms of Classes and Gear; mostly we need stuff in this thread here: https://github.com/HabitRPG/habitrpg/issues/942#issuecomment-32297759
Okay, I've made an important post about potentially changing our organizational structure HERE: https://github.com/HabitRPG/habitrpg/issues/942#issuecomment-32821242 You guys should check it out.
I hope this is good size:
Armor parts: I'm totally get confused about Trello, on witch board shoud I post links with this stuff?
@Lukrecja Ooooh, very Skyrim like!
OH. I just realized. If anyones looking to make class art and stuff, check out this trello card:
https://trello.com/c/yBxlDFb9/359-classes-2-0-hybrid-advanced-classes
These are ideas for the next set of classes (probably released via quests). They likely wouldn't be coming out soon, but if people were interested in making some art, I could start making headway on designing their abilities, stats, quests, etc. Plus, since it could spark some life into this thread and we could see some contributions besides just pets and bosses :)
I'll take the Templar/Paladin set.
I'm interested in joining in with the pixelmaking, but should I post things here, or hold off until the trello thing is resolved?
@itsasooz - Post here for now, I'd say. Until @lemoness gets the trello settled.
@Popitop - Cool! Give it a shot and let me know what you come up with :)
@Lukrecja Looks awesome to me! If you haven't already, send me an email at leslie@habitrpg.com for the permissions form.
IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT I am now beginning the process of transferring all of the important information/accepted art from this thread (and the other pixel threads) into the upcoming Trello board. This is a huge organizational project that will take several days of sustained work.
I want to make sure that no art is accidentally lost in the shuffle, so I am closing this thread now. I will be posting the links to the new Trello Pixel Board when it is fully set-up. That means that for several days there won't be anywhere to post/discuss HabitRPG pixel art - so please, just hold on for now. Don't post things in random Trello cards, or I probably won't see them. I'll point you to the right spots soon, never fear!
This transfer is my top priority, so that people can get all of their contrib rewards before the winter event things expire on the 31st. Closing these threads for this brief interim will make my job go much more quickly.
I will post here when the Trello board is open, so don't unsubscribe yet! Just watch the thread with bated breath. Once the Trello board is set up, this thread will be permanently closed and all activity will switch to the Trello, which will lead to more organization and faster response times with rewards.
See you guys soon!
@Lukrecja - That armor looks awesome! But uhm... it's just a pixel version of the main armor from Skyrim, right? @lemoness I don't think we can use that, can we? That helmet is so synonymous with Skyrim, I'm worried if that could be a legal issue.
When I was making it I wasn't thinking about adding it to game, so if You think is something illegal in this I also can make other version of this, for example: Anyway there was a lots of horned helmets in RPG games, Skyrim is very popular now so everyone associate this helmets with it.
@Lukrecja - Well yes, sure, but the way you designed the helmet originally is very much synonymous with skyrim: Iron helm that cover the eyes and have downard curved horns. Using the same color scheme. On one hand, it is just a helmet. If the armor wasn't the signature Skyrim armor, then yeah it probably wouldn't be a problem. But as it stood, it could have been.
With the horns flipped up like that, it's better. That might be enough? I don't know enough to be sure, but should be a step in the right direction!
@loafy, @Draayder, @smograth, @coyotino, @zoebeagle – Are you still around? We’d like to use some of the art that you posted here, but first we need you to give us permission. Please send me an email at leslie@habitrpg.com so that I can send you the permissions form (no need to reply to this thread).
THE PIXEL BOARD IS UP!!! https://trello.com/b/vwuE9fbO/habitrpg-pixel-art
I tried very hard to make it clear and organized, with an obvious structure so that we can avoid confusion. That means there are some new art requirements that weren't officially in place before. If your art is attached to a card, it has been approved, so don't worry if it doesn't exactly comply with these new standards. If you have a WIP that you were working on in here, please repost it as a comment in the new cards, but before you do so, make sure that it fits with the new requirements. This will make everything easier on the organizers and programmers.
Thank you so, so much for your patience! This was a huge task, I can't wait to see all the art that people have been working on over there!
