replace the 3 buttons with only one and try to hide it a bit behind the left screen border #6

Also, I personally would hide the button when the overlay is expanded and add a little left arrow to the hero portrait on the bottom to indicate that the overlay can be hidden by clicking the portrait (or swiping left on it?).
