New Mecanum wheels. #136

Originally, I had wanted to put off buying the new Mecanum wheels until we had funding, since even the cheapest ones cost $100+ (the rest of our budget) and I didn't want to block all other development because of this, but I think we'll need them for the fundraiser.

The wheels I had originally decided on are sold out and won't be back in stock until late fall. For now, I've fixed the current wheels by using a piece of wire to hold the roller in place (The C-clamps were missing) and that seems to work as a temporary solution, but I am back in the market now.

The other thing that I want to make sure Mechanical is in on is that the new wheels are probably going to be bigger than the ones we have now, since wheels with higher weight capacities are going to be at least 4", otherwise I doubt any new wheels would be any better than the ones that we have now, so that's something we'll have to keep in mind with that chassis design (12x12 limit).

Sorry I just popped up. I'm a Fulbright-er from Indonesia studying financial engineering in NCSU and I operate a Bitcoin exchange in the Asia Pacific. Is there anything that I could help for the mecanum wheels, fundraising perhaps? Before I could get hands on helping on coding the robot? Dendi, no need to worry about popping up. In fact we wish more people would if they have something to contribute to the conversation.

To your fundraising point, when it comes to Mecanum wheels we don't know what we want yet, but when it comes to fundraising that is always an issue. If you like and you have an idea for fundraising go ahead and create a new issue for fundraising and we can start a dialogue before you arrive. Your input is much appreciated.

Update on the current Mecanum wheels, while we are still missing the C-clamp, but the wire solution appears to be reasonable enough for the coming CrankArm fundraiser on the 9th, there is still some slight risk here tbd.

Update on the new Mecanum wheels, one of the ideas of creating a D-shaft to Hex wheel mount seems like it may be a more difficult task than we had hoped, as well as adding on other stability and strength concerns. So that takes things made by Lego out of the running. There is also still some dissent about 4" diameter vs 2" diameter, but unless someone can make a pretty convincing arguments against 4" that is the way we have been leaning.

I have been looking at the vex Mecanum wheels and they just seem like they are too big. The fact is that they take up a lot of room and now makes the mechanical design significantly harder. I am looking into designing our own Mecanum wheels using a process known as resin casting. However, it does seem like it could take a while to set up. Another thought might redesign the way the wheels are mounted to the robot so that they don't bend the shaft.
