Robot Frame design #476

I have been working on designing the motor part of the frame.

Chris, Can you take a look at the Robot-Assem file when you get a sec and see if there is any thing that could be wrong.

I would like to get the files laxer cup some time this week.

From last night's meeting, we reviewed the basic chassis layout Josh worked on in Solidworks (the link above is a link to LAST YEAR'S robot. The proper link is here: https://github.com/IEEERobotics/CAD-models/tree/master/Robot_16_17 and requires SolidWorks 2015 to open). This frame is meant to be a platform for the CS folk to start using the new DC and stepper motors to work on driving the bot.

The main issue as seen last night is that the wheels, brackets, and motors (both DC and stepper) are quite a bit longer than last year's motors. This is a result of wanting new wheels (so that there is a more secure/reliable method for attaching the wheels to the motors) and higher torque (and lower speed) motors for driving (hopefully giving more control over the motion of the bot). Since the drive assembly is longer, it is not possible to use a plus sign configuration (ie wheels placed in the center of a side of the robot) for the wheels. Thus, the offset required introduces some questions regarding the controller of the robot.

For a first pass and in the interest of getting CS something they can work with over the summer, I believe the chassis will work and should be laser cut. Worst case scenario, we move the motors such that we are outside of the 12"x12" required footprint so CS dev can continue and we engineer a clever way to make it fit for competition. The issue of DC or stepper motors should be sorted out as it will impact the design of the final chassis for competition for this year.
