Feb o²S²PARC Damage Assessment Module #1113

Open elisabettai opened 1 year ago

elisabettai commented 1 year ago

Description: Creation of an o²S²PARC damage assessment module based on the work of the Lazzi group

Deliverable: o²S²PARC functionality

Acceptance criteria: It is possible to apply a post-processing tool to convert exposure maps into damage maps.

Out of scope: Perform further research on the Lazzi model; SIM-Core will only leverage what the Lazzi group publishes or provides

Deadline: Q2

Y7Q2 Status update (03/13/2024): Delayed Implementation: A pipeline for image-based assessment of recruitment and safety metrics of neural interfaces has been established that also makes use of the fiber population statistics. Some extensions are still required, such as thermal simulations and damage assessment based on Lazzi’s group work to convert exposure maps into damage maps. The delay was caused by (i) the need to automatize parts of the pipeline expected to be delivered by REVA, that are not available yet (particularly image processing for segmentation and fiber location identification) and (ii) insufficient information published by Lazzi’s group to reproduce their work (we are now in contact with them).

Y7Q3 Status update (06/13/2024): Delayed Implementation: The pipeline to use the work from Lazzi’s group has been established and can be used to predict damage maps from tissue level EM fields, statistics about fiber distribution and the resulting cellular level exposure. It was presented at the NIH monthly update on 03/27/2024 (see slides and minutes). SIM-Core has been in close contact with Prof. Lazzi, providing suggestions how to improve / extend his work, offering help with onboarding, and supporting the publication and review of a corresponding paper. However, we still have not received the trained AI network from Prof. Lazzi, which might be related to it still being unpublished work.

Mitigation: The pipeline is in place and ready to accept the missing module. The delay does not affect other implementation work. We are still trying to obtain an estimate from Prof. Lazzi on when we can obtain the missing information.

New deadline: Y7Q4 (but essentially dependent on Lazzi cooperation)
