Instead of a chance to spontaneously explode have it have a chance to "burn out" and if power is applied could cause a fire.
Also you could have a couple of materials create unstable batteries that will have a chance to explode.
Behavior
Galvanic Cell
A rechargeable battery depending what it's made of will give benefits and drawbacks; high/low energy density, a chance to spontaneously explode. Wears down with use and eventually needs to be disposed of.
Single-use battery
All the same things as Galvanic Cells but generally higher energy density, stability, cheaper. But can't be recharged and needs to be thrown away or recycled.
Battery Box
A block to hold 1-12 battery slots of any types. If one battery inside it malfunctions spectacularly it has a chance to damage batteries besides it or the whole box.
