7 years ago max stack is 6x , but theres a iten that can give insta 3x , but if you use that item and then try to drink to 4x , it will always fail

Drink Liquor Shortcut Q
You can buy a liquor from the herb store and refill using the menu option at Yellow GateMaster.
When you drink Liquor
Your damage will be increased by 15% But your defense will be decreased by 30% These effects can be incremented with each drink. But there is a chance to loose all the effects by drinking additional Liquor.
Stack limit of 3?
Drunken Stumble effect, maybe sets value of bottle if wearing one?
