Fisheries Economics of the United States: NOAA Fisheries

Published each fall, Fisheries Economics of the United States takes a detailed look at the economic performance of commercial and recreational fisheries and other marine-related sectors on a state, regional, and national basis. It also describes how U.S. commercial and recreational fishing affects the economy, in terms of employment, sales, and value-added impacts. For each region, management highlights give a summary of stock status, updates on catch share programs, and other selected management issues. Sanctuary Soundscapes: IOOS

NOAA and the U.S. Navy are working to better understand underwater sound within the National Marine Sanctuary System. For the next few years, these agencies will work with numerous scientific partners to study sound within seven national marine sanctuaries and one marine national monument, which includes waters off Hawai’i and the east and west coasts. Standardized measurements will assess sounds produced by marine animals, physical processes (e.g., wind and waves), and human activities. Collectively, this information will help NOAA and the Navy measure sound levels and baseline acoustic conditions in sanctuaries.

Science on a Sphere (SOS) Ocean Dataset Videos

Researchers at NOAA developed Science On a Sphere® as an educational tool to help illustrate Earth System science to people of all ages. Animated images of atmospheric storms, climate change, and ocean temperature can be shown on the sphere, which is used to explain what are sometimes complex environmental processes. Videos can also be downloaded for viewing from the web.

Spray is an autonomous underwater glider that changes buoyancy in order to profile vertically and glides horizontally on wings. Spray is often piloted to repeat survey patterns or to make many crossings of currents. Spray operations are project driven, usually focusing on regions.

Trap Count Statistics: Maine Department of Marine Resources

These data are compiled by the Department of Marine Resources (DMR) in Maine using fishway counts provided by agencies, power companies, and a harvester. NC indicates a species is not counted at that location. Fish returns should be considered as provisional.

The data is a wind resource data set, wind forecast data set, and wind power production and forecast data set derived from the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) numerical weather prediction model. The data span from 2007 top 2013 is designed for use in a variety of next-generation wind integration analyses and wind power planning.

Harmful Algal BloomS Observing System : NOAA/NCEI

The Harmful Algal BloomS Observing System (HABSOS) is a data collection and distribution system designed to provide environmental managers, scientists, and the public with a tool for tracking and observing current and historical harmful algal bloom (HAB) events in the Gulf of Mexico. The HABSOS interactive map combines Karenia brevis cell counts and associated environmental information into a single product, using the latest sample data available to create an accurate picture of HAB location and quantity.

Gulf of Mexico Harmful Algal Bloom Forecast : NOAA/NOS/NCCOS

In the Gulf of Mexico, some harmful algal blooms are caused by the microscopic algae species Karenia brevis, commonly called red tide. Karenia brevis blooms can cause respiratory illness and eye irritation in humans. It can also kill marine life, and lead to shellfish closures. Blooms are often patchy, so impacts vary by beach and throughout the day. NCCOS monitors conditions daily and issues regular forecasts for red tide blooms in the Gulf of Mexico and East Coast of Florida. You can find the forecasts and up-to-date conditions on the site.

Coastal Ocean Monitoring and Prediction : University of South Florida

The website provides observation (radar, moorings, and station data), coastal ocean model forecast (West Florida and Tampa Bay) on red tide, and large scale circulation with trajectory tracking based on satellite altimetry and global HYCOM. A suite of data analysis tools is also provided on the website. The associated near real-time Integrated Red Tide Information System (IRIS) also provide Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) information. The Coastal Ocean Monitoring and Prediction System (COMPS) provides station and radar measurement.
