Totally agree. Arcane archer should be open to all. I am a huge proponent of build variety. Sadly, nwn did a turrible job balancing the game (I'm looking at you barbarian).
Though I will say, I only think the strength based sword and board builds rule through about level 8... which I grant you is the majority of builds. Dexterity based fighters, have real advantages over them in the later levels.
Arcane archers in source material are racial locked.
While I sympathise with the desire for more variety, Aicasarto is spot on in that the source class is racially locked. As the problem this was raised for (i.e. build diversity) has a plethora of other potential options going against source is the least-likely approach.
In my eternal pursuit for build variety in an otherwise extremely-limited game, I suggest that arcane archer should have its racial prerequisites removed. Currently, Thay discourages anything that is not a strength-based build or Red Wizard, due to the nature of the enemy spawns, dispel spam, and general hardcore difficulty of the server (granting an enormous advantage to the high strength, high constitution builds that can survive random warhammer and greataxe crits from overleveled mobs).
By removing the racial restrictions on this prestige class, we would see a wider spread of character builds and concepts (and wider applications to various factions in the game). Archers would have a non-sneak attack way of increasing their damage, fighters could add some ranged abilities or skills to their repertoire, bards could contribute to a fight without getting deleted for daring to go toe to toe with the local tanarukk gods, etc.
It would also be nice if the weapon selection was expanded to cover other ranged weapons: slings for those proper halflings (and for that proper fireball slinging aesthetic), darts for the Jarlaxles out there, throwing axes for the true master of Kuldfaern, and crossbows for a very under-loved weapon in the game.
