Open up the forge #72

I don't think it's necessary to restrict my level what properties are available from the forge you can add to gear. The server uses item level restrictions so you already can't shove +4 AC onto a single item at level 1.

But, why would it be a problem if a level 10 player prefers, say, +3 universal saves and 5 acid resistance (a level 10 item) instead of +1 universal saves/+2 ac/ and +1 ability score (also a level 10 item)?

The item level restriction is already self limiting.

flightlessavian commented 1 year ago

Item levels are EXTREMELY poor as a way of determining item balance : see the low cost of resist 10's which were removed from the forge, vs. the extremely high cost of other traits, making that say, Tagget's Talon, a +1 Keen dagger is somehow a level 7 item.

The sad thing is, that on a dynamic encounter system server, such as we are, we need to have level-tied things bc. otherwise we'd punish players for levelling up.

NecromancingtheStone commented 1 year ago

Right. I have no problem with the item level limit. I mean I do, but I get why it's there.

But there is no question that it cleans up any need to resist any properties at the forge. In other words, if it offers +4 to ac and such, that's okay. With the level restrictions in place, no one is running around with a 45 ac at level 2.

If I want and can fit +4 ac on something, and willing to give up save bonuses, damage resistances or whatever else to get it, it's fine. I'm accepting crap saves or taking more damage for a better AC. Or, I'm accepting lower ability scores. All fair trades. So why bother having BOTH restrictions?

It's just unnecessary.

flightlessavian commented 1 year ago

AFAIK precisely because item level costs can't be adjusted for the various properties as they're hardcoded

WilliamDraco commented 1 year ago

They are not hardcoded, but the math is very involved and complicated to figure out, let alone balance - and item level requirement is directly related to actual value/cost.

NecromancingtheStone commented 1 year ago

But why world they need to be adjusted? Item level restrictions do as fine job. You can't shove a crap ton of AC and still get everything else you want. And you can't shove a crazy amount of saves and still get the other things you want.

There is no need.

Just open up all properties the forge can craft, and keep item level restrictions in place.

It's fine.
