buffer was removed in Python 3 in favor of memoryview which has a similar but not identical interface.
unicode was removed in Python 3 because all str are Unicode.

I think I've cleaned it up a little better - see commit 05b2d0891b81786539bb417cde81ccadb0c86d3c
