Vertical split commit popup throws an error when closing or commiting in vsplit

Description

Whe the configuration is changed to use vsplit commit editor, The following error occurs

Steps to reproduce

1. use minimal config
2. open file from repo
3. open status and stage
4. try to commit
5. cancel commit with c-c c-k
6. error is observed

Expected behavior

No error should occur

Actual behavior

Errors out on closing the commit view
