This is currently being worked on, on the mqtt-overhaul branch. But I have found that the subscribe feature of MQTT doesn't appear to work. Which makes it hard to communicate with the device other than just the device itself reporting the current state

Closing for now as this is currently so far down the list and is blocked by MQTT driver problems that it is just taking up space
