Should expand the natural history exercise into a scavenger hunt. Something like 10, 15, or more things that students must do to learn about insects. Examples:
Go for a night walk and listen for insects. How many kinds can you hear? Track one of the songsters down and observe it singing. Collect it.
Find a gall and cut it open. What's inside?
Watch some insects on the surface of water. Describe what you see. Collect them.
What kinds of insects can you find pollinating flowers at night?
Would make students get out more on field trip, do some small group activities.
Would also encourage students to record more "micro-Darwins" (haiku), i.e. those moments/observations that are short but inspire questions (e.g., a wasp ovipositing in a mushroom)
