OLD URI: 0142IbnMuqaffac.AdabSaghir NEW URI: 0142Pseudo-IbnMuqaffac.AdabSaghir REASON: Authorship of this text has been contested by Gerhard Richter, Francesco Gabrieli, Ihsan 'Abbas and Mohsen Zakeri. The latter argues that the text consists largely of wisdom materials translated from Pahlavi and that its author is most likely 3Ali b. al-3Ubayd al-Ray7ani (d. 219/834). The evidence is not conclusive however, so it might be best to change this simply to a "pseudo" name.

NOTE: Please, paste the old URI into the header. If you think the death date or the author's name should be changed in all URIs of that author, please fill in the author URI only (e.g., 0255Jahiz). If you think something needs to change in the title of a book, in all versions, please fill in the book URI only (e.g., 0255Jahiz.Hayawan). Finally, if a URI change relates only to a specific version of the book, fill in the Version URI (e.g., 0255Jahiz.Hayawan.Shamela0000001-ara1).

Zakeri's article is here: https://www.jstor.org/stable/1580507?seq=1

@Lrnzmtths @maximromanov Do we have a general rule for pseudo-authors? The URI proposed by Gowaart is invalid in any case because it contains a hyphen. Do you know of how pseudo-author is expressed in (modern) Arabic? But also, we should probably give his date as different from Ibn al-Muqaffaʿ's?

I asked around on Facebook, and some colleagues came with suggestions for how pseudo-authorship is expressed in Arabic:

I think it is fine to simply add Pseudo in front of the shuhra. Remember, the goal of these URIs is to be functional, they do not have to be super precise --- that we do in yml files.

  • fulān al-muzayyaf (suggestion by a native speaker; I did not find many examples for this)
  • shabh fulān (e.g., some google results for "شبه ديونيسيوس" Ps.-Dionysius)
  • fulān al-zā'if (e.g., some google results for "ديونيسيوس الزائف" Ps.-Dionysius)

I agree, it is probably more clear to use Pseudo than trying to use the correct Arabic term (especially if the pseudo-author is not especially well-known under that Arabic name). So, shall we give him the URI 0225PseudoIbnMuqaffac, and explain in the yml file that it has been tentatively attributed to Rayḥānī?

This seems like a good solution to me, although I could also see the value of keeping the date at 0142 (just because the dating remains unclear). Thanks Peter for trying to sort this out.
